Howa Mini action bottom metal the way it should be. IMHO

I posted this rifle in a different thread a while back and stated my dislike for the detachable mag and plastic mag housing and that I had a fix on the way for it. There was some interest as to what the fix was, so here it is.

Some people obviously like detachable mags on a hunting rifle but for my style of hunting they offer zero benefit and a whole lot of negatives. To me the Howa plastic trigger guard with it's horrible mag release, coupled with the huge bulk of the housing and mag sticking down, made for a very awkward carry and easy potential to drop or lose a mag out in the bush. Before buying the rifle, I of course did a lot of research and found several potential solutions to the problem. You can buy stiffer mag release springs to make it harder to accidentally drop the mag out but of course that doesn't really solve the core issue I had. You can also buy an aluminum replacement housing for the detachable mags that replaces the crack prone plastic one but again, not the solution I was looking for. I then found a hinged floor plate conversion for the 6.5 Grendel offered by 2 companies and knew that I was on to something. Jefferson Outdoors was hugely helpful and offered me a blemish demo to try out my experiment to make it work with the 450 Bushmaster cartridge.

So my solution, while a little crude and needing a few finishing touches yet, was to simply cut down a factory mag to use as the internal box mag with their hinged floor plate conversion. With some careful measuring I was able to cut it so that there was just a few thousandths clearance between the mag box and the receiver when it was all torqued up and it feeds absolutely perfectly. I used the factory mag spring, which is really too long and very awkward to stuff back in to the housing once you pop the floor plate but surprisingly it is really easy to just load the rounds in from the top through the receiver opening. It can easily hold 2 down with one in the chamber. Maybe another round would be nice but really, it would be a rare occasion where that wasn't enough. I just cycle them through the action to unload and done.

Overall it's a game changer for me. One handed carry is so much better, it's night and day. The rifle looks so much nicer, lean and trim.

I would highly recommend Jefferson Outdoor bottom metal for anyone wanting to convert theirs to a hinged floor plate. Pretty sure they're all out of stock due to material shortages and I think they only offer 6.5 Grendel at the moment but once they get back into production, they make a nice piece. Very well machined and finished.

Anyway, here it is. Probably the only hinged floor plate 450 Bushmaster there is.

Before (not a great pic but google it if you're not sure what they look like)

Looks nice and clean, good job. I prefer a detachable mag on my Howa and haven’t had any problems with the Legacy setup, I do wish they would make the trigger guard/mag well out of metal though. Have been on the fence about using their dm kit on another rifle but I’m hesitant as the action screw torque values for the HS stock are much higher than my Howa. Would be nice to use the same mags in both rifles, have thought of making some aluminum pillar sleeves for the trigger guard to give it more support.

Looks great man. How much money did that set you back? I also love the mini action but hate the detachable box mag and mag release . I decided to cut/file the mag release flush with the rifle after losing a mag while climbing up my tree stand. Now you can just get a fingernail on it which is fine by me. There’s a cpl threads out there about cutting down the factory mag to make it almost flush, but the mag is ~$80 CDN!

A project I’m working on now is a 3d printed 3 round flush mag conversation kit for it, but it’s one of many projects on the go. I got the new baseplate to fit mint so far, but that’s about it so far.

I like your rig and was my first choice but Jefferson's was out of stock and no ETA on internal magazine/flush bottom metal. I did go ahead and purchase thier metal replacement for the detachable magazine. The magazine catch now takes more force to drop the magazine so much less likely to accidentally dump the magazine.

Don't quote me on this as I haven't looked at the price on their website for a while but I think the complete conversion kit sells for around 165 USD. Pretty reasonable in my opinion.

Just looked at their site, too bad they don’t have one for the full size 1500.

I get the feeling they are a 'cottage' industry and not their primary source of income. I can't complain about the quality of the product I received, top notch. They shipped the day after I ordered and answered my email inquiry promptly. I first heard about Jefferson's via a Australian hunting website.

Has anyone looked at or have the Kinney's trigger guard/mag well for the Howa Mini Action? It's made from aircraft aluminum anodized and they do ship to Canada. I'm thinking of ordering one for my Howa 222.

Been a wild ride, but I think I’m happy with the results. Take the spring, follower and spring plate out of your original mag and install them in my 2 round flush mag kit. My kit will include the new mag shell and a new btm plate. This is for the 7.62x39 and 6.5 Grendel.

Just in final testing now. 2 rounds feed reliably, but three rounds seem to jam due to the factory spring length. I’m ok with a 2+1 hunting mag anyways. PM me if this is something you would buy.

If your handy like myself and don’t mind hand fitting the mag to your own rifle, I can sell you the raw mag shell and bottom plate for cheaper. The raw shell works for the .223 mag also. PM me if interested.
