howa or rem 700

Will someone please ship me a Rem 700 so I can do side by side tests and add this to this thread? Then we would know if I made a mistake....

I promise to return it..... might take awhile.... ;)

Cheers,
Shawn

The only new 700 I’ve handled that I would buy without hesitation is the 700LTR but it’s hands down a better rifle than your off the shelf SPS, every 700SPS I’ve held felt gritty when the action was cycled but LTR was smooth as silk.

Good choice on the Howa, I wasn’t too hot on the Nikko either and swapped it out. It wasn’t terrible and it now sits on another rifle that only sees range use, the 4-16 was too large and just more mag than I wanted for hunting plus the mildot reticle wasn’t what I was interested in using. I put a 2.5-10x40 on it, perfect all around size for me.

I thought the Legacy mag kit looked cheap at first but I’ve had zero issues with them, 100% feeding and mine isn’t loose once inserted. I have a 5 and two 10 round mags, they all function great, I prefer the plastic mag due to less weight when loaded then a metal mag would be. The only thing I’d change with the mag kit is the release, I’d like to see it on the rear of the magwell and not the front. Less chance it will get caught on something but my mags have a bit of friction while inserted so loosing one isn’t a concern form me.

I finally got to shoot the new Howa 223 rifle last week. The shop did the initial aligning of the scope. I was fairly happy with it. I am thinking a 223 is a good stepping stone for me...asI have little other experience. I ran a box of shells through (Winchester targets ( white boxes)) and at 50 yards, the groups were about 1 1/4". They got better, but at 136 yards, (just where I happened to stop walking as I was running short of time, the group was more like 2.5 to 3 ". Being new to so much of this, I am not too worried about it. I am thinking that things will get better as I move along. As for the rifle, I like it. As I mentioned in an earlier post, the magazine does feel cheap....but it fed ok. I am glad I moved up to the Vortex scope.

Just an update to the thread. Not sure why the longer shots were so wild but for a first timer, probably a myriad of personal issues. I would love to blame the ammo but....

Sorry the photos are sideways. They look ok on my computer. Maybe I need to only take them in portrait format?
