Many times I read about rem model 7's being slabbed for lightweight builds. Just wondering if I could have the same done on a weatherby vanguard action? I've got a large assortment in the safe, but have never built a rifle or had one built yet... I'm thinking it may be time to try it. Not exactly sure what yet, but looking for options. And no it will never be on a rem action.

Anything is possible, but it depends on what you are willing to spend for the potential weight savings (lots of $ for little weight) some actions are better candidates, due to certain designs.

When building a lightweight, barrel and stock are the big ones - action work is a much smaller place to shave weight.

Okay. What would you suggest for a non remington action. My T3 light is pretty light, not sure that could be beat by a whole bunch, well I'm sure it could, but it may be rather costly.

You could certainly slab a Howa and realize the same 3/4 oz weight saving you do on a Remington. You could likely lose another 1/4 oz off the recoil lug and another 1/4 off the handle. There you go; an ounce and a quarter. Yahoo. Hold the phone! You might be able to lose another ounce by rounding the bottom and slimming the tang. All in all, maybe three or four hours of set-up, machine and finishing work. Plus bluing, of course. sub in some lightweight plastic parts like on the T3 and the thing will practically float.
Any time I have slabbed the receiver on a lightweight build, it was just to make it look lighter. The real weight savings, as mentioned above, came from a skinny barrel and a light stock.

Wildcat is working on a t3 mold. Drop your t3 into a wildcat and be done with it.

Or take one of your 6-lugs, hard to improve on them.

My Howa Alpine is advertised as a " lighter weight " rifle and has a bit of meat taken off both sides of the receiver , but as others have said I believe the majority of weight reduction came from the use of the Bansner stock.
End result being the final weight scoped and field ready is exactly 7 lbs., nearly a half pound heavier than my similarly equipped 700 Ti..

That sounds like a good possibility.

I'm down to the one 6 lug, and don't want to modify anything on on that one... Haha. I like it the way it is, but it seems to have a heavier barrel with the 338. The 270 and 308 I had were much lighter contour.

Thanks for the help everyone!
