Howa

Also consider the Vangaurd S2 as it has the Howa 1500 actionand is at same price point. The Vangaurd stock fit me a bit better so I went in that direction.

I prefer the Howa action to a Rem 700. Howa vs. Savage Axis is not even a contest in my opinion, Howa hands down!

I tried a friend's Axis (.30-06, early production) at the range. It was accurate but I didn't like the stock. I wouldn't try another. Try to at least handle a Howa, they make the Vanguards for Weatherby and lots of owners are very happy with them. I tried another friend's Vanguard (.223) and thought it well worth the extra money compared to an Axis.

I dislike the Remington company and haven't shot any of their current models so I can't offer anything useful to say about them.

i notice though that to get a 1:8t the barrel has to be changed because Howa only goes 1:9t from factory?...or has any one see this different?

I have the Vanguard S2. It was originally stocked in some sort of winter camo wrap. I got it for a great price, restocked it in a Boyd's Evolution stock. It is a 243 and is very accurate. Buy the Howa, or a Vanguard, you will be happy.

Another strong vote here for the Howa 1500. I have the factory FDE CeraKote barrelled .308 action in a Multicam stock and it is a laser on the gongs out to at least 300m. The value for your dollar is a total knock-out with the HOWA 1500 - You cannot go wrong!

I owned a howa, axis, and currently own a rem700.
No plans to ever own an axis again.
And I'd like to get a howa mini action at some point.
I have no complaints about my rem700

Howa is probably the safest bet with the current state of remington.

Howa 1500/Weatherby Vanguard is a great rifle, you wont regret it. Depending on what your planning to do with the rifle the factory barrel should be good up to about 70 Gr bullets so need to go faster unless your shooting 75+ gr bullets.

for those poo-pooing the Axis...is that based on the original non-accutrigger model or the newer Axis II that does have the accutrigger? asking as I heard the original Axis sucked, but not the revision, so much.

also, what trigger to put into the original Axis? I happen to have one in LH .270 Win that I’m giving to my son-in-law and likely help him fix the lousy trigger issue. :).

edit - my thought is buy whatever the best deal is. if it happens to be particularly cheep, putting in some recommended upgrades may make for the better rifle in the long-term.

Not even comparable. Howa 1500. Hard to beat at any price point. I have a Howa chambered 6.5x55 and it's a laser beam. I upgraded to a B&C Sporter stock and have never looked back.

Doesn’t matter what edge or axis you compare a howa to there is no comparison. I’ve had 2 original axis and shot a new axis 2 both are the same. Cheap and flimsy rifles.
