Howdy everyone! PAL course - did yours focus on guns or hunting?

Hey everyone,

I didn’t quite realize how big the Canadian gun community was until I was recommended this spot from Reddit!

During the PAL course (I did it @ EatWild in Vancouver) the focus seemed to be more about hunting rather than guns. I guess the instructor was going more with a “don’t ask don’t tell” policy about gun ownership.

Finally looking forward to talking with y’all about guns!

Cheers,

Sean

Weird. My PAL course was all about guns, basically had nothing to do with hunting. Took mine via SilverCore.

The CORE hunting course should obviously be about hunting, but not the PAL - other than maybe a cursory mention here or there I wouldn't expect much about it at all.

I mean he did do all the correct curriculum, I got 100% on practical and written, but there was a LOT of info about hunting, and saying things like “no need for milsurp, semi auto” etc for hunting. Came across a bit fudd centric

Ugh. Yeah. Fudd is right. Milsurps have probably killed more game than sporting rifles in this country, what with all the Enfields and mausers out there... And semi autos are not at all uncommon either, especially with waterfowlers...

Did you have to handle firearms during the test? If not, it sounds like you passed the hunter's ed and not your PAL course.

Instructors are like teachers, all different and obviously his love of firearms was bent towards hunting. Congrats on the 100 percent test results. Welcome too Nutz

It's called the Canadian Firearms Safety Course. There should be very little to nothing about hunting, unless it pertains to firearms safety while hunting (like how to safely cross a fence line). Hunters ed. is a separate course (AFAIK, I've never taken it).

There are plenty of bad teachers. Anyone that is opinionated or against certain type of guns should hang up their teaching badge.

My PAL course was guns only with little mention of hunting. The Ontario hunting course overlapped with a review of basic gun safety and then went beyond the PAL course and covered gun handling in the field, ammunition selection, gun regulations relevant to hunting, blaze orange requirements, game identification, regulations on animal handling and transport, etc.

Inasmuch as law-abiding firearms owners must follow all of the laws (including the respective provincial hunting-related laws), it is very important for every CFSC student to know that these (hunting-related) laws and regulations exist, even though these (hunting-related) laws and regulations are not included in the CFSC testing. The critic might suggest that content is unnecessary, assuming that such content is included in Hunter Education, but that has not been my experience. So it follows that some CFSC instructors might choose to include some necessary "...info about hunting."
