So I am very interested in purchasing a S&W 5946 like the RCMP use. But of course, its a 12(6) in its standard configuration. Now I don't really want to pay upwards of $1,500 on a gun that goes for waayy less in the States.

I'm curious what would happen if I purchase a 5946 from the States. How would I change the barrel, pin the mags, and get it across the border safe and sound?

Does the importer change those things before its brought over? Is it work out to the same cost in the end as if I were buying it here?

I would appreciate insight from anyone with experience doing this type of thing before!

Thanks

Canadian residents

Canadian residents cannot, under any circumstances, import prohibited firearms newly acquired outside Canada.

If you are importing grandfathered prohibited firearms that you previously temporarily exported from Canada, you have to provide the CBSA with:

your valid Possession-Only Licence or Possession and Acquisition Licence with appropriate privileges;
the valid registration certificate for the firearm;
an import permit issued by Foreign Affairs and International Trade Canada; and
a valid ATT issued by the Chief Firearms Officer of the province of residence.
If you are importing firearms that were previously exported from Canada, it is a good idea to carry proof that you purchased the firearm in Canada, or that duty was paid when you imported it. You can ask CBSA staff to document your firearm on Form BSF407, Identification of Articles for Temporary Exportation, before you leave the country or provide a copy of the export permit under which the firearm was exported.

I really don't think putting a different barrel on would matter either. Since the firearm will have a prohibited FRT number and how would the CFC verify its been modified to a restricted firearm? Would a gunsmith outside of the US be able to verify this? Are there even verifiers outside of Canada?

With a longer barrel, it is no longer prohib.

But who verifies that? At the CFC when you try to register that gun, its going to show up to them as prohibited....so, you tell them it has a restricted barrel and they just take your word for it?

You won't be walking across the border with it, you'll need to do a lot of paperwork, best left up to irun or prohpet river, who will verify, etc.

I'd ask them... ...i've had them pin mags for me that were purchased as 20rnd so they'd be compliant up here as an example.

Basically just email them your original post informing them of what your looking for. They will let you know if it's possible, how long it will take, and how much it will cost.

I think Bar Sto made 106mm 5946 barrels in the past. I imagine if you get IRG to source both the gun and barrel for you, it will increase your costs. Might be cheaper for you to track everything down in the states, pay for it, and have it shipped to your import/export company for the final export/verification/registration/shipping. I'd bet your biggest challenge will be finding a 106mm barrel.
