I'm really tempted to get one of these but after shooting a friends mini-14 and seeing exactly how inaccurate it is, i figured i'd ask around since i don't know anyone who's got one for me to try out.

i dont expect results like a bolt action tikka or anything but the best term i've heard to describe the groups a mini-14 shoots is "Minute of barn door"

on a side note thats just the basic cheapest mini-14 setup, are the higher end models much better?

i have an sa 58 and its not too bad. i can hit a 12 x 12 sheet of paper at 100 meters with an open sight. a pumpkin was hit multiple times at 150. i plan on putting a vortec sparc sight on it and it should get better. im shooting 55 grain ae black box ammo out of it. i have taken it coyote hunting and it does shoot minute of yote if thats what your looking for.

In my limited experience, the couple of Mini-14s I've used have been much more accurate than the VZ 58s I've used. My Mini 14s have both shot consistently around the 2" mark at 100 yards. The VZ 58s my buddies have are shooting more around 4-6 " at 100 yards. But, like I said, my experience with them is quite limited.

well i already know i don't want a mini-14 after shooting my friends it made me kinda sad, i was hoping the VZ 58 might get some better groups (and by the look of that thread which was linked by yardie it does look to perform better than the mini-14 i shot anyway)

anyone else have one of these and can comment on the accuracy they get? how about aftermarket goodies is there much available for it? can you use standard ar flash hiders or muzzle breaks?

Yes, it DOES look very promising...

...however I'm still holding off on making a purchase based on one decent review.

I'd feel much more confident if there were numerous reviews supporting each other...I'd hate to think it's a crap shoot in attaining a decently accurate CSA 858.

The poor shotoing the the Mini-14...you sure it wasn't due to YOUR shooting? What about the ammo beign used? Was is cheap-o stuff? The newer Mini 14s are much better too btw.

it wasn't my shooting. I wasn't the only one shooting it, we were all getting similar results and shooting from a sturdy bench rest, i'm not a great shot, but i can get MUCH better groups with every one of my rifles, hell even my 12 gauge got better groups

This mini-14 was purchased new in the last few months so not an ancient relic.

a variety of ammo types were used and it consistently shot groups the size of a large pizza with everything we had, including 2 varieties of hand loads the owner was testing.

Hoping to hear more from VZ 58 5.56 owners i'm not ready to buy yet based on that one review but it shows promise so i was hoping this thread might get a few more VZ owners out of the wood work to comment on how much they love it and how its a tac driver :p

OK, so I don't have a scope on mine but I did a little open sight shooting at 100m a couple weeks ago. From a shooting bench and no sandbag/gun rest assistance I was able to hit the 12" by 12" paper target 38 of 40 rounds.

It's kinda a crap shoot really and pretty hard to say how accurate that is because I really am not a very well seasoned shooter and wasn't really taking a lot of time between shots. I think I will take it out tomorrow and try setting it on a sandbag and see how it shoots. I would have liked to get a scope for it but can't really afford it right now and am actually trying to sell it to pay for bolt action .223! :D

IMO , if it's accuracy you want get a bolt action. I had a mini 14 once and it was not that great , even with my hand loads.
I don't know much about the CSA858 , but I know that once I gave up on
the cheaper semi autos and went with a bolt action I am way happier!
For under a thousand dollars (same price as the CSA858)I got a VTR in .223 and put a nice redfeild scope on it and it shoots really well !!
I keep my sks for the times I just want to let loose and have fun!

did you ever try a Norinco M4?

absolutely best buy for $650.00, and wayyyyyy more accurate then the other two rifles.

Have a look here C7s:

Regardless if you have a $600 rig or a $6000 rig, if these basics aren't instinctual; your accuracy will always be a crap shoot.

Thanks for the link yardie. Some really good pointers there.

Here is the result of my range trip today with my VZ 58 in 5.56. Keep in mind I don't have a scope so iron sights from the factory and today I was using a sandbag type bench rest for the front of the rifle only and from a sitting position. Targets are 8.5" x 11" standard printer paper and were at a distance of about 50 yards. Top photo was my best and bottom was my worst of about 80 rounds through it today. The rest were all pretty much somewhere in between!

I think you are trying to get to good accuracy out of a firearm that wasn't really meant to be as accurate as you want it to be with iron sights. Think about the role the firearm was meant to fit. It wasn't made to be a sniper rifle. if you did put a scope on it then the accuracy will probably be better.
I shoot my CZ 858 at targets with iron sights at 100 yards and am happy with the results I get.

what i want is the most accurate non restricted semi auto for my dollar, i dont expect it to be a sniper rifle, but i'd like to see how it compares to the other options i'm considering, (vz 58, cz 858, mini-14, sks etc)

the NORC AR may be in my future, but that's a different void to fill at a later date :p

Cammy7s
thats not to shabby thats leaps and bounds better than i was seeing with the scoped mini-14 we tried out, thanks for the pics

Have you taken a look at the Norc M-14? I've got one, love it to death, drop some optics on it, maybe bedding, but that thing can really perform.
