How's your local deer herd doing?

6 wolves moved in and wiped out the herd. 2 trappers moved in and there is 1 wolf left. Hope the deer come back. The little wintering hole I used to see 20 have been deer less for 2 years.

Up at my main place the lack of snow is a mixed blessing. The deer have lots to
eat, but the night hunters have little to slow them down. Truck tracks all over the fields and signs torn down. I don't know how
Much one will compensate for the other.

I hope I live long enough to one day see an end to a certain race basically having free roam to do whatever they feel like whenever they feel like wherever they feel like. Protectors of the land my ass.

The few places I frequent, the deer seem to be making a very good recovery from the last couple of years. All seem to be in really good shape for the time of year.

I am in South Central and we have no issues as we have no people of that particular background. I hope it stays that way. You must be from the North.

Broke my record this year...... feed Them in the winter and had 28 around my old place that is now my parent's place...... previous was 27... dad had to tell mom to text and let me know.... lol

Drive from southeast to NYC today for work.... literally dozens of deer in the fields munching grass..... but most were the size of my golden retriever...

Same deal around here, last few years I've seen a lot more wolf sign and being in a low deer density area to begin with doesn't help, hell we can't even hunt does in 7a. Don't think I've seen more than 4 or 5 deer in our fields this year, seen a whopping three at once and MAYBE a dozen deer overall in the last two years.

I had my usual gang of 8 show up to-day, some days I can get up to 12. They are very interesting to watch. There is a distinctive social pecking order and hierarchy. The dominant doe will rule the roost and the hove's will briefly fly some days to maintain that status. Even the dominant does fawn's hold a higher position, almost like royalty, the price and princess. Over all the deer population here in NW Ontario has been down over the last many years. Probably half of what it was 5-6 years ago. Large mature bucks are noticeably scarce.

I am in south central Manitoba. As was said we had a ton of snow in December! I think if it wasn't for a few warm spells we would of lost 50-60% of our herd again. Overall the deer look ok in my area. Very large herds on food sources. Was 311 on a corn field by my house the other day. Went for a drive last week and in 30 or so miles counted over 600 deer. From what I have seen we have more snow than south of the trans Canada Hwy. I actually would of preferred Manitoba closing the season instead of making it bucks only. Why kill everything with a horn on it's head? So many people are not fussy and kill any buck. The age class structure is really messed up where I hunt. Mainly due to the winter kills a few years ago. Trail cam pics of mainly young deer. Very few 4.5 year old or older bucks.

Where the hell are you? Spruce woods area? Deer Shangri-la?? I have never counted 600 deer in a year and I don't think you can count that high to begin with. I'm calling you out on these numbers. Have trouble believing you could legitimately get these numbers even from a plane. Although I have seen over 100 deer per winter for years in the same guys pea field near a community pasture.

And you're right, the age structure is really messed up. But not because of bucks only. When guys shoot fawns and does, especially before they're mature, they skew the buck to doe ratio. For many years I have only shot mature bucks (3.5 yr old or older). Haven't shot an antlerless deer since I was a youth and these deer should be reserved for young hunters (and Aboriginals of course because they have rights!!)

I practice quality deer management as my hunting philosophy and this is the most balanced approach to game hunting in general. It maximizes hunter opportunity and deer/elk/animal herd health, quality, and numbers. It takes discipline and effort on the hunters part but pays off big time in the longrun. Unfortunately provincial biologists in Manitoba have no clue how to manage game at all or care for that matter.

If you're a provincial biologist or wildlife manager and you're reading this...you suck! Please resign you need a career change.

...and here we go again...

Must you piss on everyone, in every thread?

We get it: you're a genius, a financial whiz, at one with both nature and civilization, the new age man, hard-working, ethical to a fault, and above all...modest.

When you stoop to insulting other lesser mortals, it really takes some of the shine off your halo. We hear that, and, as we kneel before your wisdom, we feel the stinging lash of your rapier wit...and it hurts. Please, be gentle.

News flash: you are, according to another thread in which you are crowing about your accomplishments, in your early thirties. You haven't been doing anything "for many years". There are plenty of other threads for you to use as your soapbox, for blowing your own horn. You've already impressed many of us on those threads...don't confuse the issue or dilute your message by spreading yourself too thinly.

There were a lot of deer in our area last year and it has been an easy winter this far... deer are most vulnerable just before the snow goes, so there is still time for things to take a turn for the worse, but right now everything points to a banner year.

You can be anyone you want on the internet. After retiring from the Navy SEALS, I tried my luck in the NFL, but hurt too many guys, so decided to take life easy and make my billions on Wall St. True story. :)

The forecast was calling for up to 30cm of snow for us today! I was on pins and needles...but as of now, we have nothing. It's cold and insanely windy (70kph gusts), but so far no snow. Yesterday we were warned to expect 10mm of rain; I doubt we got more than 2mm.

They are now telling us we will receive 2-4cm of snow later this afternoon. I can live with that; so can the deer! :)

Enjoy it while you can; it will all start getting more difficult after you hit 35...:)

Being seeing 3-5 from our new house these last few weeks. There are also coywolfs around (they love to howl right in front of our house) so it can't be the easiest existence. It's only a small green/wild space surrounded by endless subdivisions.

That's my take as well. I think what get's them here is a chinook that freezes and ices everything over followed by a couple weeks of very cold weather, especially if the snow is crusted. So far, so good.
