HP slam fire, it's the sear right?

While testing this HP at the range today, it functioned alright for a few rounds, then a new mag, close the slide, and the thing slam fired .
I empied it, checked it for obvious breakage, and closed it, then opened and closed the slide a few times and once again, the hammer dropped when closing the slide.

The trigger is frighteningly soft on this gun, most likely it was ####ed with by a previous owner sometime down the line..

Is the sear itself what is causing the problem? or the lands on the hammer?

should I just replace both the hammer and the sear to be safe?

I really want to get this fixed quickly as I hate having "projects" lying around collecting dust.

I'm not an expert on the HP trigger so take my input for what its worth (a starting point and not the gospel only). I'd strip it and look to see if either or both have been modified, and check the hammer and any other springs involved in the function of the trigger assembly. If you could check them visually against a good one that would be ideal.....hope that at least gives you a starting point. Oh, and I'd check to make sure the fireing pin is free and clean in its tunnel, and/or that it wasn't a very high primer on a reload that did it (unlikley). Did the hammer fall as the slide went forward? If so It should have been caught on the half #### notch, a slam fire like that is mucho dangerous, could have went full auto on you.....(hey, can I borrow it for a mag or two of "testing"?:D)

I will check the tension of the sear strip tonight,

I'm assuming I want to be sure it is VERY tensioned, right? as not tensioned would be the sear would easily lift with any "ruckass" like, closing the slide causes.

if the sear strip ISNT tense enough, how can I remedy this, do I need to replace it, or can I just...tension it myself (assuming there's not much to adjust as it's just a band of metal,)
