Hi folks...

I have an HS Precision stock for my Savage target rifle I'm putting together...

I need to get the comb higher so I can get a good scope eye relief...

I had deepened the action screw holes, and noted that the whole stock there from paint down was aluminum... does anyone know if the butt section is the same? If so, I could put in an adjustable comb assembly (the one where you cut the stock and put the little risers in) instead of one of the bolt on cheek risers (like a Karsten)...

So my question is: What material is the butt section of an HS precision stock made of?

Thanks

EB

Maybe 10 yrs ago I asked Remington about the HS Precision stock on the 700 VFFS, and got an ambivalent answer. Then I found a little gif of the metal insert. Imagine a shallow square section form around the foreend, that has bedding screw holes and bedding V's, then is a round rod through the wrist and into the butt. The filler is dense foam and the skin some hard plastic.

There is a solid piece of aluminum that runs the length of the stock. It houses the area that the bipod/sling swivel attaches to, the action bedding area, and runs through to the butt. In the butt section, it is just a tube though. The tube is about 1 inch in diameter, and about 1/8 thick from memory. Inside the tube, and around the stock is a high density foam. Around that is (I think) fiberglass, then CF.

I didn't add an adjustable comb to my rifle, but a removable one. It screws into the butt, and is bedded to the contour of the outer stock. It looks like hell, but it fits perfectly, and is strong. If I were to install an adjustable comb, I would buy terry cross hardware, and a comb, and go from there, but it would take a fair bit of work.
