I just recently watched Full Metal Jacket. Who here all thought the sniper was sniping with an AK???? Correct me if I'm wrong, but it sure looks like a VZ now. It's funny how you catch the little details when you're older.

I noticed that also the last time I saw the movie .... Mind you it's not <impossible> that <some> NVA units were equipped with VZ58's, but if it could be proven it sure would re-write part of the Vietnam war's history ...

LOL. I'm sorry. Pardon my ignorance. I should have known that this has already been brought up. Nice pic though. That's the exact frame that tipped me off. LOL

No need to be sorry. Especially on my account.
If everyone had to search the whole forum for everything they wanted to talk about we'd all be 100 years old before we got our first post.:)

Just confirming your hunch in the best way possible. With pictures!

i think the bolt handle is different... am i right??
I'm guessing the bolt and the slide. To me it seems a bit angled.

Both correct.
The bolt handle and exposed bolt are a good tip off. Note the lack of an ejection port.

Other differences include:
The foregrip shape and porting is different
The VZ lacks the spar under the barrel that the AK has

That's all that really jumps out at me

The entire movie was filmed in the UK. This is probably the closest they could get to an AK. Of course in real life, the VC used Russian, French and Chinese firearms. It would have been an RPD, AK-47 or possibly a Chicom Type-56.

Same thing in Red Dawn, those were mostly all VZ's as well.

Really? I haven't seen the movie in a few years, so I will have to watch it again. Before I bought my CZ, I was one of the ignorant masses when it came to the AK and its variants. I know, I know, remember, I said I was one of the ignorant masses....:D
