Got out to Hullett today. Up at 5am, on the road at 5:10, arrived at 7:20. Saw quite a few flocks of ducks and geese but only got 1 opportunity to pull the trigger (at a hen mallard) and I missed! First time there, so the mission was 70% scoping out the place. Lots of walking!!! I hit stakes 6, 7, 8, 9, 33, and 48.
It was my first time trying this kind of shallow chest wader type marsh hunting, no decoys, and I'm a fairly poor caller. Like I said, mostly a scope out mission and it was just nice to spend the day outdoors with my 870.
It's a beautiful spot. I saw a really nice buck on one of the trails, he stared at me until I was about 100 yards or less. Lots of frogs, muskrats, herons, and even a woodcock that startled me.
I know lots of guys on here were asking questions about this area - so shoot if you've got some. Hope the pics are ok (even though there are no ducks, I'd call the day a success).
Stake 9:
My gear at stake 9:
Nice looking (8 point?) and friendly buck:
Stake 48:
Lunch break in the truck, gave me a chance to try my first MRE from Costco.ca - very tasty, and filling! :
Cold and wet and ready to go home:
