I am planning to go to Hullett for some small game hunting, I've looked around on their site and its looks promsing. Anyone ever been? How'd you like it?

Hullet is a great place. It's very large. And can be very busy. Especially on opening day of waterfowl. I have never hunted small game, only waterfowl and pheasants. For waterfowl you really need to spend a few hours scouting at the beginning of the season because you never know how much water there will be around. For pheasants, you must have a dog or you are wasting your time.
So, go during the week rather than a weekend, grab free map at any of the parking areas and a thermos of coffee and drive around the whole thing to get a feel for it.

kk thanks. Now kinda a stupid question but I have a dog that loves to go explore the woods and everything. Hes not trained for hunting but will do a good enough job of scaring up some pheasants I think, and he listens well so I could call him off he is wanting to go take a bite outta the one I shot.

I think a special license is required for your dog if you take it hunting with you, I may be wrong though.

I may be thinking of coon hunting at night....

I'm in the same boat as you ranger dave, I'd like to know the legalities of having the family pet tag along.

Never hunted small game there only ducks. If you can go mid week best time quiet. Take a thermos or two. I bought a camo life jacket to wear when in the marsh. Glad I did . There are some deep holes if you plan a walk in hunt for water fowl.

I have heard the same re a dog is a must when hunting pheasant.

If he runs away and doesn't come back, good luck finding him. Hullett is HUGE.

If he scares up every pheasant between you and the next guy, or interferes with someone else's hunt, you won't be appreciated!

I wouldn't worry too much about that. Keep in mind that this is public land. The local Gold Triggers have only as much right to hunt there as you do.

Any dog is better than no dog in my opinion. As long as he/she will come when called, I'd say you are good to go.

Glad you started this thread. I am off work for a few weeks and thinking about heading to Hullett mid-week. From what I can tell, having never been there, the water is shallow and I should be ok without a dog while waterfowling?

Any other advice on hunting this area would be appreciated. Getting in some ducks and walking for some pheasants in the same day would be nice!

This will also be a good chance to test out the Costco MRE's I just got shipped to me. Hot meal in the pond!

Look back a couple months in the OFAH mag there was a article on Hullet, there is a fee to hunt I beleive, and If I remember right they were not stocking Pheasant this year.Could be wrong.

They are releasing phesants on a weekly basis but don't expect to find birds easily. There is no fee just a donation if you choose.
Crowca you are thinking of Luther Marsh.
Regards

The website says:

"1.How do I access the hunting stakes?

Walk-in (chest waders): 1,4,5,6,7,8,9,27,28,30,32,34, 46, 48. A canoe is recommended at all other stakes."

It also says water levels are down this year. To me that would suggest you could have lots of access without a boat. Anyone been there that can confirm this?

Do you know if your only allowed to to one form of hunting a day? Or could you rabbit, pheasent and water fowl hunt all on the same day?

I've been up there a few times.Go in the morning and park in the parking lots for site A where you park is the # of the stake you have to use so do your scouting before hand. Then in the afternoon pack up and move your vehicle over to site B and pheasant hunt the rest of the day.And yes take a dog any will do so long as it doesn't take off on you.

I'll be heading to Hullett on Thursday/Friday if anyone wants to join. I'm going to try my luck with limited supplies as it's a pretty last minute trip. Some good old pass shooting.

If anyone has been there recently and can recommend a good shallow water stake I should try for, please let me know! I don't feel like swimming with my waders on!!

Im considering going up to Hullet for Rabbit and Squirrel, before deer season hits. Are there any special considerations I should bear in mind for that particular conservation area, and/or relative to the waterfowlers?
