The letter below was written to the Humane Society, International by my son in response to an article on their web site. Thought it might be of some interest here...
"Do you want to hear an example of how beavers are dealt with now that trappers are less active controlling populations due to lower returns on pelts? You have organizations like yourselves to thank in large part:
Wait until the ice is on and beavers are confined to their lodge and feed bed. Cut out the dam, the entire colony dies a horrible inhumane death freezing to death unable to repair the dam. Unfortunately that's one of many alternatives to proper, humane wildlife management.
Overpopulation means an increase in "nuisance" animal control, i.e.: beavers: flooding roads, farmland and wells, revered on the Canadian nickel, thrown into the forest to rot.
Go ahead and keep torturing small animals with your campaign.
Trappers are the true lovers of wilderness, keepers and protectors of wildlife.
Your site is plagued with misinformation and outright lies appealing to human emotion and lacking any scientific basis.
As encroachers we have an obligation to be managers.
Give it up.................carefully regulated, fur is sustainable and fur is green. Long live the founding industry and greatest tradition of our country.
(name): proud licensed trapper"
