Hungry Review of Magnamatic CRT15 (Carbon Removal Tool) for AR15 bolts

I bought my first AR-15 about 1973, a Colt SP1. My method for cleaning the inside ledge of the bolt carrier was to soak it in gun oil (now we use CLP), place a swab around the female end of a cleaning rod section, and then insert above into the bolt carrier front, using the rod section with the swab on it to scrape (in a circular motion) the ledge free of carbon. The 'tail' of the bolt itself was never a problem. Works for me (and others). I put about a thousand rounds in four days through my (taxpayer-supplied) C7A2 eighteen months ago, and it was spotless in no time using that technique.

As for the FN combo tool, I agree: the most usefull part on it was the Gas Plug Wrench. Needed it after about twenty full mags went through the C2. Gas Regulator Wrench was a close second. Whenever I dropped the Combo Tool, it always landed on the little Gas Port(?) Reamer and drove it in level so I couldn't use it anymore.

For your 12-13 Jun (Sat/Sun) 2010 Service Rifle participants coming to Connaught, I'll have this tool there for you to play with. :D

Feel free to use it and scrape the carbon from you bolt carrier assy and bolt tail.

See you this weekend ... Get ready for action packed CFSAC Matches 1 through 4!

Cheers,
Barney

It looks nice, but I would never put a steel scraper tool in there.

The gas rings seal forward, and the bolt tail fits the carrier almost exactly to seal the rear of the expansion chamber.

The tolerances should be in the tenths of thousands of an inch in a MILSPEC. The chrome depth is also very small.

A bronze scraper, like the MUT would likely be okay.

The best tool to clean the inside of the carrier is a chamber brush.

There is a reason the CF never issued a scraper for the C7.

Chuck3436 - Note that this thread is from 2010, and afaik Neit Arms no longer exists. You may be able to get the tool from another supplier, ymmv
