I'd be curious to hear from anyone else who hunted the same, or and adjacent, WMU. The first day of rifle season was magical and perfect. Cold, with a light fall of snow, and out we went. My buddy nailed a nice doe and at first I feared it to be a gut shot. Fortunately, it only nicked the top of the rumen but blew out the liver. That doe dropped where she was hit and there was minimal mess when we field dressed it. He had a doe tag and I only have a buck tag. I counted 24 doe seen and the only buck I saw wasn't even fit to be called a spike horn, showing only 2 little 2" prongs on it's skull. We had a horrible spate of 5-1/2 days of warm weather; t-shirt weather! I don't know why the rut never sparked up but I seriously wonder if the ministry shouldn't consider starting rifle season on the second full week of Nov. instead of the first. This is 2 years in a row where the rut started at the end of week 2. According to biologists, the rut is supposed to be sparked by hours of daylight so I don't know what's going on. There was very little gunfire in the surrounding area for the whole 2 weeks and lots of the local guys were amazed at the lack of doe tags, given the many does seen. We may head back up for a few days of bow hunting, but that remains to be seen. I hope my fellow hunters enjoyed better success.

Similar scenario to yours for our group in adjacent 57. Earlybirds at camp shot a doe on opener, the rest of us arrived for second week and it was remarkably silent, both at our camp and all around us, minimal shots heard.

Thats great your seeing them, My mom, father in law and I had a great season down here this year,
I passed up 3 bucks the first week, they were scraping rubbing, fighting and chasing does on opening day through the full 2 weeks, my mom came down south for the hunt on the second week, and she got a nice 10 in my one stand, the father inlaw got a great 8 piont in my other stand behind his place, and I was tired of passing them up so I took a nice 6 on Friday after they had gotten thier deer, watched him chase does around all week, usually I wait for the big guys to come back around for archery behind my house after the crowds are done pushing everything around, but too much to do this fall so I figured I'd end my hunt early this year... Was a great year down south here for us, the guys that live east of Bancroft had a better season all around it seems then the majority of folks here though talking to everyone.

Cheers,
