So I recently retired, moved with the hope to find good local guys to hunt with.
I have over 30 years experience hunting in several provinces and territories.

A friend asked me to join his buddy hunting moose and deer this fall
Many years and success betweent them...
Excellent

Buddy has a young family member that may join us
Limited experience, good guy and willing to work
Still excellent

Buddy has another family member that may join in
No licence, experience, intends to get hunting licence
All still good

We leave in a few days
My friend cannot go, unfortunately, since he is the group leader
And both young inexperienced guys are going on the trip
But the one never did get around to his hunting course, and pass his hunting test, WTF?
So he will just be along to experience things and help with the chores
All still good with me

The tradition with these guys is to share major expenses equally, that being cabin, food, butchering and gas
And share meat equally too

How would you guys share meat and costs with the guy who cannot hunt?
Be nice to help a young guy, but as far as tracking and scouting he will be more in the way

Would you guys share some meat with with lead guy who cannot go?
Last minute and no fault of his

My mind is open on finding a fair compromise
However I do feel it prudent to agree on such details at the start

I only agree to make hunting plans with people who have gotten their safety course. I think it's reasonable to show some level of commitment, and most people agree after I explain my past experiences. It's not that I don't want to let them tag along its just that I only have x number of hours to hunt a year and don't want to waste a second.

That's quite the catch 22 you have there. The thought in my parts for sharing the meat and expenses is that all in the hunting party can actually hunt. However, if the unlicensed guy is still paying his share of the major expenses, I'd give him a meat portion, but he better be doing alot of the gutting and cleanup, "learning skills" ;)

Maybe toss a couple good roasts and some steaks to your buddy who couldn't make it. He'll appreciate it and probably isn't expecting anything at all. As for the non-hunter, I personally would cut him some slack on the costs, but his meat wouldn't be coming out of my share unless he seriously impressed me with his work ethic.

I was 14 my first time in the hunt camp for the 2nd week of the hunt. I was one kid with no license and no gun with 11 men who all smoked in a small cabin at Mount St.Patrick. I carried wood, hauled water, washed dishes, kept my mouth shut most of the time and sat quietly on watch with either my dad or my uncle. My dad paid my share of the food and I sure didn't get any share of the meat. By the time I was 16 and licensed I was fully accepted and did get my share of the venison.

I don't envy your position. My own experience makes me think the young'n with no license pays his share of the food but doesn't share in the spoils. He's on the uphill portion of his learning curve. The other inexperienced hunter could be a liability and would need to be monitored closely and mentored as need be. You're walking into an unknown. Best of luck.

Split everything, ie the costs, work, chores, gutting, skinning, quartering and then split the meat. Not there, not included.
Teach the rookie all there is cause maybe next year they might be the lucky hunter for the group. JMHO

If the unlicenced fella really pulls his weight well at the camp, and you should probably tell him the expectations, of the cooking, cleaning, and all the other chores he should be doing, I'd give him a share of the meat this season. But make it clear that by next season he had better have his licence and be buying a tag. He may turn out to be a good hunter in the future and giving him a break this year could be a diamond in the rough.

I'd split the cost amongst those that go. I'd split the meat amongst everyone, rookie and no-go included.

You're starting from scratch here. You wanna build a group that supports and values each other for years to come. Sacrificing a few roasts is an inexpensive way to do that.

Definitely share the costs and the meat both. And share the work!
Your a new be and should see which way the wind blows . After the hunt decide if you want to go with them again or they may not want you.

Let's say for discussion purposes there are 2 or even 3 unlicensed would-be hunters along for the experience and to learn the ropes who will share the work and costs. Do they share in the meat also? If you say "no" then why not, the same principle must apply. If you say "yes" then extrapolate it out with more non-hunters, where does it end?

In my young experience there was one older man who came along as the cook. That was his sole purpose of being there. He didn't share in the costs. And he did often get a few hours hunting in close to the camp. He also shared in the meat.

If the guy with no license is willing to be the camp b*tch, then he rides for free, gets no spoils. That would be his penance for letting the group down - he obviously doesn't understand the gravity of the situation!

Whatever you do, make sure you all sit down to discuss it BEFORE you go.

I agree totally
Must 1st hunting gang, was almost 30 years ago
Had many good times
And many good moose were taken
But communication broke down, and the gang split in 2, with bad feelings
I was invited to join both camps, but never went back

Good points, for sure
But not in this situation

The young guys are both in there 20's, not dumb kids
I suspect:
That cash is tight
He may have been hesitant to jump in with the training and gear expenses
Being unsure if he really would enjoy...
Or get time off work

Pretty much sums up my feelings as I started this thread
Glad to see I was on track

I am willing to take this position at our pre hunt meeting
And see where they stand
Then come to an agreement

if you share the cost share the work then share the meat ,,,very simple ,other wise just have the new guy help at camp and pay for his food but then no share of meat ,give him the option ,,,,,just make sure you have if figured out before you leave for the hunt ,,,,Dutch

Is meat splitting a common bone of contention with hunting parties? In most of our hunting situations if someone mentioned that meat was important to them they would end up with all of it.

it can be, especially if meat is at a premium (ie - usually none)

It isn't with our group - we split it up equally even if you miss some days.

But I know of groups that keep "records" of who was here when this deer was shot, who was here when that one was etc.
