Well, since I moved up here from SW Ont, I havent even seen a grounhog. I'm itching to go blast some varmints, so heres the deal: I'll trade a turkey hunt (last 5 yrs, I'm 2 for 2 with at least 3 called for others) for a good varmint shoot....a good one.

I have no problem driving a reasonable distance if you don't.

I'm in Penetanguishene, 40 minutes N of Barrie.

What's a reasonable distance Ryan? I could put you in the middle of hundreds of gophers out here...

It is an awful long way to go for ground rats though...

I know for turkey hunting anywhere in Ontario you need to take the course(even for non-residents). And you may need a licenced guide for it too, im not too sure.

"...I haven't even seen a ground hog..." You won't until Spring either. They're hibernating. Ground hogs are one of the few true hibernating beasties. They go into their dens near the end of September and don't come out until the snow is mostly gone.
Coyotes or crows are you only option this time of year. Lots of both up your way. Go and politely ask some local farmers(lots of dairy farms up that way) if you can hunt coyotes on their land. Don't go on Sunday, don't take a firearm and don't wear camouflage. If they say no, thank him and leave. Wouldn't hurt to ask if he knows anybody who might let you though. and when you find a farmer who will let you hunt coyotes, you're likely set for chucks come Spring.
Plan 'B' is the Tiny Marsh. It's near Elmvale. Hunted ducks there and they have a deer hunt and pheasants. Do a net search for Tiny Marsh.
Oh and the Spring turkey runs 25 April to 31 May. A course and test is required.
