Hunt with a milsurp sporter or a manufactured sporting rifle?

In the previous season the custom Swedish Mauser sold me on this calibre and milsurps. This year I'll use a Krag 30/40 and a Steyr Mannlicher 8x56R carbine with peep sights for moose, a choice of several Norwegian Krags in 6.5x55mm and 6.5x54MS and for the first time for deer a nice Carcano carbine. Aside from a near new Ruger and some CZs that will probably be back ups or sit in the cabinet (and eventually be sold off) this hunting season I am going to go all milsurp. I am just so impressed with the quality and performance of these old (most 100 years) firearms......it just takes some sight improvements mainly for my old eyes and some time at the range and they should out perform most newly manufactured firearms.

I hunt whales with my 303 british. I am hoping to get a muskox and possibly a barrenland grizzly with my M1 Garand 30-06.

I hunt with a handful of milsurps, some sporterized, some "as issued".

my lee enfield no4 mk1 longbranch is my big game rifle for the most part its the way it left the factory theres really o need to "sporter" anythign thats what we call bubba and bubba is disliked in every milsurp group

ive used my sks and mosin m44 and 91/30

id use anyone of my rifles for moose but i did find a nice swedish 96 in 9.3x57 id use that or my martini henry for moose

I have many of both Military and sporting rifles and use them both for hunting, depending on the challenge and distance. Some long range stuff is nice for open country, and as well many milsurps do very well with open sights in thicker bush at shorter distances. Much of the bush and river valleys that I hunt in do not present shots much more than a hundred yards. Any gun will do.


I always feel this topic is more of "what is required", than "what is preferred"

Over the past 50 years, I have used a No.1 Mk3 Churchill Arms sporter, a Czech 8x57 (later 8mm/06), and an M44 Moisin. I have yet to buy a new regular sporting rifle in deer hunting caliber.

Shouldn't lie, I guess. Last year, I did buy a beautiful Model 70 in 7mm Mag. It was 30 years old, but had never been used. I showed it to my shooting buddy, and it disappeared!! Had it been a 30-06, I would have kept it.
