Hunt with Milsurps...sound off?

I took my first deer with my No.4Mk.2 which still has the full wood. I still use it as it was then, with a Weaver K2.5x (post and crosshair.) But this year I'll be trying a ParkerHale Supreme No.4Mk.1* (B&L 1.5-6x36) for an antlerless mule deer tag.
 
Actually hunting with a milsurp? What a joke....almost EVERYBODY in Canada over 60 started out hunting with a 'sporterized' Lee Enfield 303( that was before the snotty nosed politically correct self appointed 'experts' looked down their nose at 'bubba'd' milsurps ) I 'upgraded' to a swede 65x55 which I now carry...

Years ago Parker Hale was probably the best source of 'sporterized' milsurps( bought one for pure nostalgia's sake,because I couldn't afford one when I was kid) but the Husky swedes from Tradeex are as fine a shooter as you can get

Not yet for me, but this year ive developed a load and bullet mold for my 71/84 mauser in .43 mauser, i plan on using it this year for deer. 380gr semi wadcutter pure lead at 1550fps. (33gr of H4895)

I agree with you for sure on this one and in my area where I grew up a substantial number of hunters under 60 carried military surplus 303's in one guise or another. Cut down or in original trim, lots of them. One of the first centerfire rifles I used was a BSA sportered P14 303 BR, along with a Model 71 43 Mauser.
The last time I was up in the North Bay,ON area I still found a fair amount of 303 brass laying around some of the pits where I used to go shooting so there are still some in circulation.

You enjoy things your way, we will continue to enjoy things our way. To us sporterized milsurps (no need for quotation marks, that is what they are) is a destruction of history. Some were better done than others, and there was a reason it was done (generally cheap hunting rifles back in the day) but that still doesn't mean it was removing the history of the item to serve your utilitarian purpose (this is especially frustrating when it is a rare variation which was cut down). Please define to me how we are 'snotty nosed politically correct self appointed 'experts''? We don't enjoy when the history was destroyed and the fact your angry your 100$ sporter isn't worth the hundreds to sometimes thousands of dollars we are willing to pay for a intact example isn't our problem. Try to understand it from our point of view, in that they aren't making any Milsurps anymore, and every one lost is one that can never be replaced (unlike hunting rifles which are still being pumped out).

There is no need to come on the Milsurps side of the forum and be insulting towards us collectors, just as I don't go on the Hunting side of the forum and be insulting towards hunters. You do your thing and we will continue to do ours.

In regards to hunting with Milsurps, I only really hunt small game so I haven't yet. Maybe some point in the future I might try for something bigger and if I do, I would likely use my P14 or maybe my M38 Mosin.
 
My little buck that I took last year was shot with 6.5x55. It was out of a Husky 1640 though. I have a sporter .303 as my backup.

I also have a Parker Hale safari in .270. It started life as a K98k. There is even a couple of Waffenamps that PH forgot to scrub. Once I get it sighted in that will be on the list of available hunting rifles.

Not a great pic but a full wood '43 Maltby out for moose this past weekend. Think this will be the last year, as the critters are moving farther into the cut blocks than I'm comfortable shooting with battle sights.

the Cooey isn't going anywhere tho.

Since finishing off with chasing elk in the mountains with my bow I've spent the rest of this season so far in the foothills with my rc K98. I have had several opportunities on wt doe's, holding out so far.

I wonder if guys knocked their front sight hoods off on purpose. Can see the post better in low light and doesn't get all jammed up with snow.



 
My group only had calf tags so we did more drinking than hunting this past week. Looking forward to getting out with the SKS for deer.......hope its not the last time I get to take a Semi anywhere....grr Liberals Who even votes for you? why do we listen to them at all? brainwashed wimps
 
Knocked off lots and lots of groundhogs with my TRW USGI M14 back in 1989 to 1991 before they became 12.5'ed.... :)

Do groundhogs count? Used 125 gr Remmy PSP booolits above 43.0 grains for W748... never chronographed that load, but it sure killed many ground hogs! :cool:

I have since sold it but my 1903 springfield that was sporterized has taken alot of deer and 1 moose. It only shot a 2 1/2 inch group at 100 yards but it seemed to kill every animal that got within 250 yards. I have also taken 1 deer with an sks and hunted with a few guys shooting enfields.
 
Downed many deer with and old no4 mk2 i got for 50.00$, use a 150.00$ swede now because it is more accurate.
Many locals still use and mix of no1's and no4's. Ammo can be sourced almost everywhere still.
Milsurps make great entry level big game rifles.

Took a couple of deer with a Parker hale no1mk3. Nice handy little gun. I took three with my Winchester M1917. I have two main hunting rifles. My main is the M1917 and browning A bolt in 30/06. Both seem to like the same hand load so I take both incase somthing happens to one. A few years ago I dropped my Parker hale pulling it from the scappard on the quad. Dropped it right on the scope on the concrete floor. Bent the scope up good. Glad I had a backup
 
A lot of Moose , Deer and Bear with various 303's , and to prove I'm an old turd , one white-tail doe with an original BAR welded up to shoot semi only ( legal then ) . The pig weighed a ton , but I was young enough not to care ........ no pictures , we were still painting on cave walls back then .
 
Countless Canadian moose & deer shot with the British Lee Enfield in .303BR.
Remember Alberts Army Surplus in Timmins Ontario used to sell them stacked in 45 gal drums.
Back in the 70s Paw checked out a few and bought one with a decent barrel for the grand price of $12.
Had it for years and it put down a few moose and deer.
We gave it to an trapper friend of ours who was a full blood cree indian from kenora.
