Hunt with Milsurps...sound off?

Took a doe at 150 yds with a sportered Turkish mauser two days ago. It was rebarreled /sportered by CIL way back before i was born and sports a CIL .243 barrel, pretty neat old gun!

It makes me sad as well , I really miss hunting with my TRW M-14 as well ........ it sucks brother .

We had a m1 milsurp with a 18" bbl in 30 m1 calibre that we used to hunt Sitka deer.
It was non-restricted when bought and reclassified to restricted after bill c51 despite absolutely no evidence that this kind of firearm was ever used in a crime.
Sold it long ago for less than we paid for it.
Expect more of the same after the "Goodale gun grab" legislation passes.

I thought I'd expand on my original response to the post. I took the liberty of taking pics of my 3 milsurp hunters and I'll pass on the accuracy results. Top one is (of course) an tricked out SKS. With 123 gr. Hornady Interlock SP and 26 gr. RL7, it'll give me a 2-1/2" group at 100 yds. I nailed a nice little 6 pt. whitetail with that 2 yrs. ago on a heart shot. He went about 10 ft. and dropped over. The second is a Swedish mauser in 65.5X55. I've had a hell of time finding a good load for it, but it seems to like 130 gr. Nosler the best on top of 39 gr. IMR4064. That produces 1-1/4" groups at 100 yds. The last one is your standard No.4 Lee Enfield, again tweaked out to suit me. I know how it must look, but trust me, it's a dream to shoot and with 150 gr. Hornady Interlock or SST on top of 43 gr. of Varget, it will give me a 5/8" group at 100 yds. My brother has a Norinco M305 on which he swapped out the Chu wood stock and replaced with a U.S.G.I. black walnut one. With his handloads, he's shooting 1-1/4" groups at 100 yds., but it's a heavy rifle in military configuration. As I'd mentioned in my first response, my first deer was taken with a No.4 in full military livery. Alas, years have taken their toll and I don't have the eyes and the muscle I had way back then. Now, everything I hunt with is scoped, but I always try to find the best load I can before I'll take a rifle hunting. I have an absolute horror of wounding an animal and having it suffer while I try to find it for the coup-de-grace shot. In spite of the years, I am still proud of the fact that everything I've nailed over these many years has been killed cleanly and only twice did I ever need more than one shot.

Got my first deer in 2003 with my qve45 K43 Sniper.

I lost the original Windage Cap for the ZF4 scope while bashing through the bush of "Gang Ranch" B.C. So I don't really recommend taking expensive collectables out into the bush... but, it was fun.

Was the only Milsurp I've taken deer with. I've taken my SAFN-49, Hakim, original K98 LSR Sniper, standard K98, M1 Garand, M1 Carbine, Mosin Nagants, SKS, SKS-D, CZ-858, etc... I never had a good shot/saw any deer while hunting with these rifles though.

I have taken multiple deer with my M305 (M14 copy), but it's not really a milsurp....

Varmints on the other hand.... MANY gophers with CZ-858, SKS, SKS-D, and TNW MG-34....

killed about 2 dozen skunks with a mixture of Ross MkIII, SVT-40, and CZ-858. Ditto with coyotes.

The past years though, I just take out my actual hunting rifles (CZ-550/Sakos etc).

I might drag out my newly purchased 1909 Danzig Kar98 for my antlerless Mulie draw though....

Have debated using the TNW MG-34 in a tree stand or blind..... just using the starter tabs (5 round limit in Alberta for hunting). But that thing is such a beast to carry. Someday....

:)

2003 with my first Deer

Took a moose today with my svt. Roughly 100 yards. I wasn't overly impressed with the mfs 203 grain soft points. Virtually no expansion however the round did tumble some which was good.

First rifle that I hunted with was a sporter Lee-Enfield that had been in the family for ~80 years.

I now hunt with a 91/30. I did replace the front sight with an adjustable front sight

Missed a buck at about 300 yrds with some hail Mary SKS shots. Did not see at deer all week then walking home atllfter atllfter sit and atllfter detour around atllfter pond from atllfter flooded road. Saw a Doe cross the road I was using then a buck follow behind her in what was a bit of a dip and then a quick rise before they'd be long gone down the road. (Road =atv trail not a real road). Will have to play with the sighting at different ranges, rifle was good for a grouse at about 50 yrds for about heads hot so will have to play with the amt of drop in 7.62x39 Barnaul SP.

Seriously? Think before you type, man.

^ If you're shooting 'hail Mary' shots at deer 300' away with an sks...your father ought to wrap that sks around your head. Do your hunting at a grocery store (celo wrapped beef) if you're not going to do it ethically.

This.

I've hunted deer successfully with an SKS, but I know the gun's limits - about 100 yards, maybe 150 on a good day with great light and I'm not bone tired from bushwhacking all day.

Ethical hunting matters. Whinging lead in the general direction of a deer at 300 yards is anything but ethical.

RC K98 bcd42 Mule Deer Doe ~150 yards iron sites
M1 Garand WWII dated Winchester Mule Deer Doe ~ 50 yards iron sites
M1 Carbine WWII Manufacture with Non-Restricted Barrel Mule Deer Doe ~40 yards iron sites
91/30 PU Sniper Izzy 1943 with Progress Scope ~100 yards on the trot PU scope
CZ858 Mule Deer Doe ~120 yards iron sites

Now I just need to use a 303 to round off the WWII collection of deer harvested.
