Hunter and his dog missing in Northern BC ----> UPDATE: Dog Proved Not to be Murphy!

No disrespect intended but working with a crew and hunting by yourself are night and day apart.
If you left your wallet keys & phone in your truck around here, your truck would be gone when you came back from hunting.

Sucks to live around there I guess

Often done so trucks can be moved on lane and a half or single width logging roads

Ontario famously has a population well spread throughout its boreal region, but really I'm just giving one of our resident action heros a hard time. Maybe he can come speak to my geography class

I dunno about other guys but I solo hunt most of the time. I literally never leave my keys or wallet behind. There may be a back up rifle or expensive equipment in the vehicle and I'd rather not make it any easier for thieves. I have been fortunate to never have a camp raided or anything stolen while on my back country adventures and camp unattended for the daylight hours. I also never park my vehicle somewhere it is blocking a road..... if I have to do that I'll tow my quad to a good spot and ride those narrower roads or my other all terrain set up..... my feet hehe
Just spent a week hunting with an upland bird dog in training. I wasn't working the dog, he is my friend's, but just listening to his adventures with the dog in the wooded country of the Babine area and the several times he has had to go in to find the dog because of it's vest getting hung up. It was a new area for him but he is an old hand at babine area forest. He also doesn;t leave camp or his truck without his radio telephone and GPS.
So without those tools , in unfamiliar country, heading off to find your wayward bird dog , I could easily see an unprepared hunter getting lost, injured or fall prey to a predator. There are also some "very dangerous" individuals in our society disappearing and murdering people nearly unchecked so that maybe can't be ruled out. I have bumped into some seriously sketchy individuals in the bush over the years that even well armed, they still gave me the creeps in that kinda axe murderer kinda way.

Hope these various missing hunters are found safe but odds are against them sadly.
One area I hunt has had a missing hunter sign up for several years now on the road in and him and his remains/personal effects have still not been found.

You asked, I’m just saying It’s more common than you think.

I rarely ever lock my truck out in the bush, if I’ve got a second gun and I’m going far enough away sure.

They seem to have called off the search pretty quickly. Makes me think they found some suggestion that the guy was thinking of suicide. If they did an IR search at night (as I assume was done) and found nothing, it does suggest the guy's lights are out, as well as the dog's. But nobody's dead until the remains are found.

Yeah seemed pretty weird for sure that the search was called off, although SAR stated that the investigation by police is ongoing. So either Suicide or another "missing person" from this area.

It is possible that he wanted to disappear... it's been done before... he just couldn't leave the dog.
Or the dog would not leave him. I really hope they're ok, but it's been quite a long time to be out there without a plan and shelter.

Hopefully the fellas that go out into the area will at least find an answer, if not a man and his dog.

People talking suicide should be very careful with their words. I imagine the people that love this man and dog are already pushing that and a million other ideas around in their heads. Leave it to best wishes or better yet, if you can, go out and look.

I'm sorry to say that I'm more concerned about the dog. The man makes choices, the dog, follows the master.

**Dog was supposedly found 100km from where him and his owner were reported missing**

Missing hunter’s dog located, sparking hope for search continuation

A dog belonging to a hunter reported missing in mid-October has been found, a long way from home and a long way from where he was last seen.

According to Micaela Sawyer, the partner of missing hunter Jim Barnes, a golden retriever found near Wonowon on November 28th has been identified as Barnes’ dog Murphy.

Murphy and Barnes were reported missing on October 18th after he went out hunting in the Chetwynd area.

Search and Rescue efforts were launched over the course of the following week, but were later paused while police officers gathered more information about the case.

According to a Facebook post from Sawyer, it was difficult to identify Murphy due to his condition after spending weeks outdoors.

“He is badly injured, with major swelling, puncture wounds (possibly from a dog or coyote), a broken front paw, and scabs all over,” Sawyer says.

“His behavior has changed too, from a quiet, independent dog to one who barks at every sound and howls when I leave the room.”

Sawyer says Murphy’s identity was eventually confirmed with help from “professionals who know him well.”

“It’s been a heartbreaking journey, and while we wish Murphy could share his story, we fear we couldn’t bear to hear it,” she says. “He’s such a sweet boy, and he didn’t deserve any of this, nor did Jim.”

According to Sawyer, RCMP officers have been contacted so they can perform DNA testing, although the results of those tests could take weeks to arrive.

She says she hopes to find a quicker way to confirm the results so that Search and Rescue efforts for Barnes can resume.

I'm confused, what's the dna testing for, the dog?

Hard to tell from the pics, but the first pics shows some pink in his nose, the second pic does not. Hmmm.

A none purebred dogs might change over time... as in years.
But not in a 2+ month period.
Is there going to be mutations in their DNA over time? Yupp. Enough that it would give a false negative on a DNA test? not even close.

The point is to prove that the dog IS THE DOG, and just A DOG that looks very similar. Personally I'm surprised the dog isn't tattooed or anything, but I'm guessing such things are less common in the sticks vs here in the city.
