N.B. man out hunting squirrels blows off fingertip in freak accident
(CP) – Sep 4, 2009

ST. ANDREWS, N.B. — A man is recovering at home after a freak hunting accident in southern New Brunswick.

The man from the Chamcook area was out hunting squirrels Thursday when his hand slid down the barrel of his rifle and the trigger fired.

The tip of his finger was blown off.

The 59-year-old showed up at the Charlotte County Hospital looking for help.

RCMP Sgt. Greg MacAvoy says they're looking into the matter, but at this point it just looks like a fluke accident.

No alcohol was involved and the man is expected to recover.

I worked with a guy who had lost his little and ring fingers hunting in the snow with a shotgun and it slid through his hands and discharged.

Must be one of those extremely rare experimental German muzzeltriggershutzen rifles developed by the Germans to furnish to the French army as part of reparatioins after World War 1. A couple of years later Winchester saw an opportunity and developed the thumb trigger .22RF rifle

My dad lost the tip of a finger to a circular saw in a freak accident.
No alcohol (or squirrels) were involved.
There was no police investigation, and it never made the newspapers.
If Dad were alive today reading this I think he'd feel slighted.

Is there any meat on squirrels?

I'm bettin he wasn't hitting any squirrels and put his finger over the muzzle to see if anything was coming out ;)
I have hunted many creatures, but I have never hunted squirrels. There can not be much meat on them?

I quess it is like eating perch, you probably need half a dozen for half a meal.

My lovely, now deceased maternal grandmother, mangled the end of her right little finger in a mangle.

Do you guys know what mangles are and is it possible to mangle something as in mess it up bad?

Did he get the squirrel?

Perhaps he learned a lesson, be stupid, and pay the price. There are lots of perils in this world. Treat them with respect, or chance having bad things happen to you.

He was probably using an "Assault Rifle" for squirrel hunting!...so he deserves it. :D
