19-year-old injured in hunting accident
Associated Press - October 7, 2009 8:24 PM ET
DAYTON, Iowa (AP) - Authorities say a 19-year-old from Boone has been injured in a hunting accident at the Skillet Creek public hunting area east of Dayton.
The Iowa Department of Natural Resources says Daniel Hartley was hunting squirrels Wednesday afternoon when his 12-gauge shotgun fired as he was trying to dislodge mud that had gotten into the end of the barrel. He was struck in the hand.
Hartley was transported to Trinity Regional Medical Center in Fort Dodge by ambulance.
DNR Conservation Officer Matt Bruner says hunters need to exercise muzzle control at all times to ensure the barrel doesn't touch the ground and become plugged. They also need to make sure a gun has been unloaded before trying to remove an obstruction from the barrel.
