Cueball,

I have though of this too. I draw influence from the comps they have in South Africa which are well organised shoots. Their site
http://www.sahuntingrifle.co.za/

They normally have a few classes to simluate different terrain and species. For an Albertan verison I was thinking of these classes:

1) Open country/ Prairie: Deer or pronghorn target
3 shots at 200m standing or kneeling, hunter may use a rest that is not attached to the rifle (i.e. sticks, sling etc)
3 shots at 250, same rules as above
3 shots at 300, any postion and the hunter may use a fixed rest e.g. an attached bipod.
Calibre: min .243"
Max rifle weight with sling, bipod etc 10lbs (to prevent guys using precision rifles and varmint/target rifles)
Max scope magnification: 8x

2) 'Parkland': Deer target
3 shots in 20 seconds at 100 m, free hand, no rests
3 shots at 150 m, standing off a rest (sticks, monopod etc)
3 shots at 200m meters, kneeling or sitting
Calibre: min .243"
Max rifle weight with sling, bipod etc 10lbs (to prevent guys using precision rifles and varmint/target rifles)
Max scope magnification: 8x

3) Boreal: Black Bear target
3 shots in 10 seconds at 50 m, standing, no rests
3 shots in 15 seconds at 75 m, standing no rests
3 shots at 100m , kneeling only
Calibre: min .277"
Max rifle weight with sling, bipod etc 10lbs (to prevent guys using precision rifles and varmint/target rifles)
Max scope magnification: 4x

4) Varmint: Coyote target
3 shots in 15 seconds at 100 m, standing off a rest
3 shots at 200m sitting, non-attched rest may be used
3 shots at 300 meter prone.
Minimum cal: any centrefire that is legally premissable
Max rifle weight with sling, bipod etc 12lbs (to keep it sensible for most varimint rigs but preclude bench type rifles)
Max scope magnification: no maximum, anything

There are some other 'rules' i have thought about for, example in the timed shoots guys with semi's may have to be handicapped (e.g. only 2 in the mag to start so they must make a mag change or drop a third into the chamber, otherise they have a distinct advantage over the bolt guns etc).

You cannot change rifles during a class (i.e. you start the 9 shot praire class with a particluar rifle all 9 shots must be made with the rifle), you can change rifles for each different class however.

I have thought about a shotgun category too, like 15 rounds of sporting clays to simulate upland shooting and then 10 clays sitting in a blind or laying in a blind to simulate waterfowl.

Thing is, you need to make the rules with general consensus and then stick to them otherwise they will always be those who will disagree on some minutia like calibre, rifle weight blah blah, 'I shoot coyotes with my 14lbs .338 lapua, why can't i do it now'

The lifesize targets need score rings on the back with a system of say 5/5 for a heart shot or spine shot 4/5 for lungs, 2/5 for liver and -1 for a non lethal wound etc

Just my thoughts!
