So hunter orange is required while a gun season for deer, etc. is open, but is it not required outside of that for small game? Why did I think it was? Or am I missing something...

Although you are right about not legally being responsible to wear orange outside of the big game season, why not throw a little on?
I don’t think it’s to the hunters advantage to be camouflaged from small game such as rabbits, upland game etc. And getting shot hurts!

This is the case in Ontario, don’t know about other provinces

Oh I don’t have any issues with wearing it. Always have. But somewhere along the way it slipped into my mind that it was required. Weird.

Your correct in the fact that it is not clearly stated. But it states " Under this Regulation: "" all licenced hunters, "" then it states who is exempted. My interpretation is that under the phrase "all licenced hunters" small game hunters are required to wear orange. I was always under the belief since this hunter orange regulation came out that the only hunting you could do without orange was migratory birds. I would not want to meet a CO while out rabbit hunting without wearing orange just to test the law as stated. I pheasant hunted Pelee Island for many years and was checked by CO's on many occasions and distinctly remember one commenting that we met the orange requirement.

Because peta says so... you must dress like a clown in the name of nanny state safety

Apparently rabbit hunters are much saferer hunters

No actually, if you look at the act as opposed to the summary, it’s even clearer:

But again, as mentioned above, do whatever you believe keeps you safe.

It still amazes me that every jurisdiction hasn't mandated wearing "hunter orange" for all open big game gun seasons. The chances of an accidental shooting drops exponentially when all hunters are clearly visible not only to their hunting partners, but, also to other people that may be hunting the same area. Be seen and be safe.

It is amazing and very funny how some like to dress like it’s a war, full camouflage with a couple hundred rounds of ammo, of course all stored in the proper military clip pouches. I even seen a guy in a full ghillie suit one time, mental condition who knows.

It clearly states in the regulations that its not required.

I know a CO personally and he told me if he brought something like this to court the Justice of the Peace would have tuned him up and told him never to bring crap like this again.

Im not familiar with specifics about Pelee Island, but it would not surprise me if it had a mandatory requirement given its unique nature.

Yeah, but you and I hail from the overcrowded bush lots of Ontario. It makes sense here. But some of the guys out west on an elk hunt could go days without seeing another hunter.

I hunt in Ontario never see other hunters. Its very situational. I hunt only on large pieces of private property. Any other hunter is a tresspasser and probably not wearing orange anyways.

It makes sense in some places and not in others

Post #7's pretty much clears it up when it states you will wear orange while hunting wildlife. Etc. etc. If one wishes to get into a pi$$ing match on this subject one will be doing it alone. Have a nice day.

I remember as a young hunter for small game, you needed to wear your licence on your back. It was mandatory back then. We had an orange plastic/cloth type vest with a clear plastic slot to place your licence in
The licence was visible if someone was behind you

I don’t think anyone was looking for a pissing match. What your “belief” is with respect to hunter orange turns out to be wrong and giving wrong advice is never a good idea - it just leads to more confusion and we need less of that, not more.

I don’t think anyone’s looking for a pissing match here... simply clarification.

Am I interpreting your post correctly that you read post 7 as indicating that hunter orange IS required for small game hunting during ANY time of year?

I still have one of those number tags. That goes back in to the early 1970's.

Hunter orange is only required for small game in Ontario in a unit with an open gun season for big game. It does not apply to a bows only season, or for migratory birds or for small game in a unit with no open gun season for big game.

Having said that, we always wear an orange vest and hat when hunting small game... the extra visibility when flushing game with a partner is welcome. One of my coworkers, shot his brother-in-law who was walking on the other side of a thicket that they had flushed some grouse into... no permanent damage, but picking #7 1/2 pellets out of someone's face and neck with a fillet knife and needlenose pliers is not how you want to spend an evening in camp.

Mr goat isn't reading it properly, but he is still right. No point in trying with people who're never wrong.

Hoytcannon has it right
