Hunter Orange Necessary?

Yesterday we were in our layout blinds hunting Snow Geese and could hear shots from spot to spot as guys were running around trying to sneak up on flocks in the fields and jump shoot them. Whenever a vehicle appeared we made sure we stood up to be seen. Last thing I want is one of those idiots that runs around shooting at geese on the ground from the road with a rifle putting a round or two through the spread. With 300 decoys around you the blinds are invisible from a few yards never mind a few hundred yards!! Wear the orange!! In Ontario not only is it the law but it may save your life. Not everyone out there is a responsible hunter!!

I remember a lad in Quebec that was shot while snow goose hunting. Believe his name was Josh if memory serves...killed by someone shooting into his rig with a .22. Road hunting geese.
We had someone shoot into a flock of geese that had landed between us and the road with a rifle....I got a little worked up about that.
I'm always leary of vehicles that stop when we are field hunting. Same deal, stand up and make your presence known.
I've got no issue wearing blaze, anything to tip the scales in my favor (for not being shot)

Was the shooter charged? Was he convicted ? If so what was his sentence.? A huge part of the problem is that our courts do not hold these irresponsible idiots responsible for their actions, even when someone loses a life because of their actions.

Ok I bought an orange vest that looks pretty much exactly like this http://www.canadiantire.ca/en/pdp/yukon-gear-deluxe-blaze-orange-vest-0753614p.html#.VhcYxZFE3Fo

Is this plus an orange toque enough?

Although I have to specify that it's NOT GUN SEASON for any game except bear in my WMU in Ontario, which (as long as I read the regs correctly) means I don't even have to wear this crap.

Yes during bear season you must wear your orange according to the regs. Only time you do not have to wear orange during bear season is when you are I your stand. It sucks I know but it is the law.

Late to thread, probably already answered ten times over;

According to regs, in Ontario you have to wear the proper orange during gun season for deer/moose/bear.. You can hunt bird without orange, and you can bow hunt deer without orange.

However, I always wear orange if I hunt, just because I don't like the idea of getting shot, and so far it hasn't impacted my hunt in any noticeable way.

On private land, where you know no one else is hunting, I would do without. But just because its my own land, and to me it would be similar to taking a hike on my own property. Adding a gun to my hands won't = getting shot.

Since i moved to canada i had to wear the orange for hunting
And been shot at 3 times in 5 years.

I hunted in cammo back in the UK and didnt get shot at once

The major problem with hunting in SK is the lack of rolling terrain. Plus you got guys with 7MMs, and 300WMs set up for 300+ yard shots. The guys who shoot these types of rifles only shoot one or two boxes of ammo a year tops. Add that up, and you get a good chance of stray bullits whizzing through the prarie.

Just where in Saskatchewan have you hunted that brings you to the conclusion that there is no rolling terrain? Saskatchewan is not all flat, treeless terrain as some people assume. As to your claim that the people that shoot 7mm or 300 magnums only shoot a box or two of ammunition per year, that is total B.S. I have owned various 7mm and 300magnums, and I shot at least a hundred rounds out of those rifles, every year. I know several other people shooting similar cartridges that shoot just as much every year.

Must be Back East think. I don't know anyone in BC that uses orange.
Mind you I've never, ever hear of anyone shooting at sounds out here either. Now that sounds insane!
Maybe because it might be a G bear, and shooting one in the butt is hazardous to your health.
Still can't believe anyone anywhere would actually shoot at a sound in the bush....Does that actually happen!?!

SB did you ever hunt with Claude Angioli? That fellow who was killed in QC snow goose hunting was a fellow guide and friend of his. He said the fellow was in his layout blind with his clients next to him when they heard a shot. When his client next to him asked if he heard the shot the guide did not respond. The client looked over to see the guide laying there dead in the layout blind. He took a round to the temple. As far as I recall I am certain Claude said the shooter was charged.

That is absolutley terrible! I hope the guy who pulled the trigger not only got charged, but was also eventually crucified!

The problem is, that when someone is shot and killed while hunting, many people use the "it was just an accident" excuse, and the courts rarely punish the shooter as they should punish someone that has taken a life through negligence. People want to crucify an impaired driver that killed someone, but they want to go soft on a person that mistook a person for an animal and intentionally pulled the trigger. Both people made poor choices, both need to be punished appropriately.

Spank
Never had the opportunity to hunt with him or Jocelyn. It's to bad, I've heard nothing but good things about him.
I know the shooter was charged but not sure if he was convicted or what the outcome was.

hey I like not having to go out and buy another complete outfit for hunting.

I can wear what everyone else out camping, quading, hikeing, firewood cutting, etc... in the woods is wearing.

or just wear what I like to wear.

if it was all about safety then anyone going out camping, quading, and hikeing in the woods while hunting season was on would be required to wear orange as well.

what are the hunter stats? how many hunters are killed each year by province? do Alberta and BC have higher rates then the rest of Canada?

I don't think there are any stats that will show that wearing orange is going to make you a better hunter, or a safe hunter.

There are stats state side. Actual Data gathered showed A big game hunter not wearing hunter orange was 7.7 times more likely to be shot by another hunter in the regular firearms season in New York between 1989 and 1993.
Here during big game season you don't see any campers in the woods and others do wear some hunters orange for the most part many also only use the woods on Sunday when there is no hunting
Cheers

90's data from NY is not going to do it for me.

particulary when the data is comming from the same department that just mandated high-vis orange, seems a little like self serving propaganda.

there was no increase in hunting accidents in Alberta when the rules changed to wear what you want, so I don't think your going to find stats supporting the wearing of orange as a safety measure. It also leads me to the question of how many non-hunters in the woods are being shot while out hiking and quading by hunters?

I see way more recreational quaders then I see hunters.

I would suggest that the CO's like orange because it makes it easier to see who is hunting and who may be poaching, or what pickups to pull over in the game check stops.
