Hunter Orange Necessary?

Forcing hunters to wear Blaze Orange, huge amounts of solid Blaze Orange, is simply so anyone can identify a hunter. If it had anything to do with safety the law would require EVERYONE in a hunting area during gun season to wear it. Not just those hunting. Why don't nature walkers or bird watchers or prospectors or anyone else have to wear it? Because the law has nothing to do with safety.

Anyone that thinks otherwise is either delusional or a Cukier.

And let's not forget the farmers, and all other workers that will be present in areas where hunting will take place during hunting season. If the orange is really about protecting people, then everyone should be protected.

How 'bout we just make it mandatory for people to take responsibility for their actions and not burden the rest of us with all this safety crap!

It's not a bad suggestion and one that I'd support. One place that does require blaze orange be worn by everyone is that great bastion of individual rights and freedoms otherwise known as Texas.

Texas Blaze Orange Laws

All persons on public hunting lands (state, national forests, and grasslands) during daylight hours when hunting with firearms is permitted must wear at least 400 square inches of hunter orange material with orange headgear, and at least 144 square inches appearing on both chest and back.

Exempt from these requirements are:
•persons hunting turkey, migratory birds, alligators, or desert bighorn sheep;
•persons within the enclosed passenger compartment of a motor vehicle; or
•persons within a designated campground, designated vehicle parking area, designated boat launching facility, or departmental check station.

I am glad we at least still have the freedom to have opinions. It's too bad we are quickly losing the freedom of choice, and allowing government to remove the responsibility for our own actions.

I respect your opinion, I just don't respect when it is forced upon us by law.

Frankly a real risk of getting shot never even registered on my radar in the bush here, I'd be more concerned about a lightning strike. With even the slightest modicum of hunter safety / ethics, orange is not required. Pretty simple thing really, not shooting at anything you can't positively identify as game, seems most places have that sorted, and it's really not hard.

Finally, no even if orange appears grey to game, it's still going to be a different grey than camo made up of the same shades as the surrounding habitat. And indeed, I don't like being told what to wear- that's the biggest part. Cleftwynd pointed out how this thread has proceeded civilly, admirable, I agree.

They had more people shot in Alberta when we had to wear red and orange then there has been when they allowed us to hunt with out it. Friend of mines brother was shot in Manitoba wearing orange or red riding on a quad and was mistaken for a moose.

I feel much safer without it. When hunting here you have to wear it. When i am scouting i never wear it. I have been scoped here numerous times wearing orange.

Always seems to be a guy from the north shore or city folk here hunting that does it for some reason

May happen but i can't ever recall getting scoped by a local hunter.

I have choice words for them if i get the chance. The ones from the French parts of NB always pretend they don't understand English of course.

I have never been scoped not wearing it to the best of my knowledge.

If it is so much safer why does the DNR not wear it ?

I asked. It is because they don't want to be seen.

Myself and my father(deceased now) were both shot here in NB by a fellow that was in the Airbourne at the time (ya know cause only the police and military are safe enough to have firearms).

#4 buck out of a 12 was not all that fun.

Guess what color we were wearing........ Safer my a##.

I would rather people not even know i am there. Works for the DNR.

P.S. Seeing how Wendy and Hiedi are firearms safety "experts" and i have actually been shot before.....does that make me a super duper duper expert??? Lmao.
