Hunter orange

my understanding is that if you are in an area where hunting takes place (which would include crown land) during a gun season where blaze orange is required, then you must where blaze.

This is what I was told during my HEP in August. It seems logical, even if it's not law.

I would prefer if you weren't hunting for you to not shoot around hunting areas- scares the deer.

You folks all know that the game animals can't differentiate between blaze orange and camo???

Actually they can. They don't see actual colors as humans do, but they do see different shades of black and white, so a broken pattern of camo is harder for them to make out than a solid blaze orange against a darker background. See for yourself by comparing black&white pictures of people dressed in camo that matches the surroundings, and people wearing blaze orange in the same surroundings.

In any case, I would rather not be seen by other humans, so they are less likely to do stupid things like use their riflescope to look at me.

Agreed. I only wear it because its law here.

The problem here is not the color of your clothes, its the trigger happy chuckle-heads that don't confirm their target and just blast away without even aiming. I've seen it many times.

We honestly don't know for sure.

I have never been able to ask a deer what they can and cannot see.:D

I still wanna try my clown suit experiment!

Saty out of the bush if you dont hunt... Some people put in alot of time to set up and the last thing they want to hear is random gun shots ... And yes wear orange unless you want to get shot...

That kind of attitude is scary retarded... there is NO NEED what-so-ever for blaze orange.

'Pumpkins' wearing blaze orange, road hunting in the pickup... I cringe.

I'll Tell ya what Doogs, I'm Kinda new to Ontario and can't find crown land that I can shoot on (such a hard task!)
So if you take me with you I'll teach you the rules!!!! :p a win, winn for both of us!!! :50cal:

while I agree that everyone has a right to be in the forests (why should non hunters suffer during hunting seasons)

the fact is that blaze orange IS NEEDED sadly.. some bad apples spoil it for every hunter out there.. they do not even identify thier target before they shoot blindly. I'm not risking my life for some idiot out there..

Also, the Bullwinkle hat you may have in your closet, even though it looks cool and keeps your head warm when the weather gets chilly, NOT a good choice in the bush during hunting season :D

Well thats a new one to me
I'll have to go tell the deer that stand in the orchard (30yds away) eating apples while watching us shooting at our private range to RUN

If deer are near gunfire repeatedly, they get accustomed to it, just like you and me. In the far north, on Crown Land, I'm going to guess otherwise.

Mostly, just don't fill my tag for me :)

Blaze is not made of kevlar, so don't rely on it to protect you from the chuckle-heads...Most of these morons would shoot at a big buck, even if they could see your orange vest in the distance...

I also don't think it applies. Making noise and disturbing a hunt, is not interfering with a hunt.

That law is designed with aminal rights groups in mind. If some animal lover is walking near you banging pots and pans together to scare off wildlife then they are interferring with a legal hunt and doing so by making noise.

Like any law, circumstances dictate it's application. Rifle fire I don't think would be considered interferring. No intent either. Intent is important in any charges.

not 100% true. The wording in the wildlife act says,

"proof that a person possessed, in an area usually inhabited by wildlife, a firearm, trap, decoy or other hunting or trapping device, a ferret or a specially protected raptor or other bird of prey, is proof, in the absence of evidence to the contrary, that the person was hunting or trapping, as the case may be; and"

you just need to make damn sure you have evidence to the contrary of hunting.

Exactly.... so.... keep a lock on your rifle and keep it unloaded until you are ready to shoot... ie. have your target set up and are good to go... when leaving lock your rifle back up and have it unloaded.... shows "evidence to the contrary".....

Since most hunting accidents seem to be in areas that require wearing orange, my thinking is that hunters can't tell the difference either!:D:p

Didn't some hunters in AB just get lite up last year or the year before?

You just hear about the Ontario ones more bcause we are the center of the universe. I had deer ysesterday not even notice the hunter orange at 70 yards looking right at me, so I have no problem with the orange.

Deer are colourblind dude.....

The most recent shootings in Alberta that I am aware of involved a person shooting his partner when the loaded gun went off as he was placing in an atv, and a person that was struck by a bullet that went through the wall of a house and struck an occupant. I doubt that hunter orange would have prevented either incident. Another incident that comes to mind is when a moron shot two people that were riding on a red atv. Game animals usually aren't red, and they don't make engine noises. As has been posted previously, orange won't protect you from a true idiot.

You Alberta boys are friggin funny......you seem to think that *everywhere* is just like Alberta.

Tell ya what....take 10X your hunters and 1/10th the land and see if your accidents increase. Now keep in mind, we are talking real bush here. Thick, mature bush, boreal, bushlots...not the scrub you find in AB.

It's not the orange....it's not the idiots....it's very simple math: 10X as many hunters will have 10X as many accidents.....add in the tight land and the numbers get worse.

I'd be willing to bet that your accidents per capita are actually HIGHER than Ontario. :)
