Hunter shot in the face

The victim, a 56-year-old Unionville man, suffered non-life threatening wounds to his face and body.
A 48-year-old Thornhill Ontario man is facing several charges after a man was shot in the face while hunting on Sunday, police say.
Kawartha Lakes OPP were called to a game preserve on Hartley Road north of Lindsay on Sunday afternoon.
Constable Mark Boileau said the men were hunting game birds with shotguns when one of them was shot.
Police said the victim, a 56-year-old Unionville man, suffered non-life threatening wounds to his face and body.
He was taken to Ross Memorial Hospital in Lindsay, where he was treated and released.
Police say Hon Fong Cheng, 48, of Thornhill is charged with careless use of a firearm contrary to the Criminal Code.
Mr. Cheng is also charged with careless use of a firearm contrary to the Fish and Wildlife Conservation Act, which deals specifically with the use of firearms while hunting.
Mr. Cheng will appear in court April 19 in Lindsay.

Preserve hunting with people you don't have complete confidence in can be a nerve wracking experience. Having felt the need to hit the deck more than once in similar situations I'm surprised there aren't more stories like this.

Whatever happened to setting out lanes of fire? I remember when I went fouling, my uncles always told me to remember my lane and never go outside of it, even if I still had the bird in my sights. It becomes somebody else's the instant it goes out of my 10-2 o'clock.

Game preserves are allowed to operate outside the usual seasons. Probably hunting for planted pheasants or chukars.

Shooting lanes, maintaining a proper line and specific rules about shooting behind the line are all good ideas for a safe preserve hunt.

What happens too often is inexperienced hunters who get rattled at the flush and don't pay attention. Those are the guys you REALLY have to keep an eye on. I've seen some bad stuff on game preserves and don't like to hunt them with people I don't know and trust.

I know game preserve or not, I only like to hunt with people i know and trust. Why would this change whether I'm on a game preserve or not?

I'm occasionally invited along by business associates on preserve hunts. A few times I was invited because the man hosting the hunt (a good friend who I do trust) wanted another experienced wingshooter along to help with guests who were new or inexperienced hunters.

Probably could read rules & regs!!

I'm gonna take a stab in the dark here.....

A once a year gun handler stumbling around a game preserve with several other once a year gun handlers = story like the above.

The only placed bird hunt I have been involved with is when I was at the pheasant farm near lake scugog about 10 years ago. After that life threatening experince I'm very surprised this is the first accident I have heard of at a place like this.

If I ever go again it will be in a group big enough we can go on our own. You definetly dont want to get lumped in with the weekend warriors.

See, I'm old fashioned. I've lost more birds and informal clay targets than I've taken, because I never risk a shot unless I know exactly what I'm shooting into, and/or past....

I may not get every bird, but I'll settle for that, if everyone I hunt or shoot with goes home in the same condition they went out in.
