Into day 4 of a 10 day hunt.

we dropped a small calf on Monday:) . It was 6 pm, so between gutting and keeping mama at bay, didn't finish until well into dark.

With no ATV, we left it on its belly (draining with a few logs under for ventilation), until the AM. we all had a piss on the outer fur to prevent predators.

By the following AM a f**king wolf had managed to chew right down to one hipbone, taking out 25-30 pounds of prime meat in the process:mad:

Is there anything that works to keep predators at bay in these situations where you have to leave the animal overnight and can't hang it high up in a tree? We heard leaving your clothes on the animal but if pissing doesn't work, I don't see how clothes will.

anyway, back at it. comments and suggestions gratefully accepted.

Cheers

I normally leave an undershirt near the carcass, and I've never lost any meat when I've done so. Also, scavengers are normally attracted to the gut pile first, so if possible, I move the carcass upwind of the gutpile and leave my shirt on a tree.

+1. a smelly shirt is good.

You are serious?/

You pissed ON your moose???

:runaway: :runaway:

Piss AROUND it. Light some brush on fire. Leave sweaty clothes on it.

All this often works. Only way to be sure is to leave someone there to guard it. Since ou don't appear to be in grizz country, it's not a bad idea.;)

Moving it will not help unless it is back to camp. Wolves etc will follow the scent of the dragged meat. We use the clothes left behind and it has always worked, maybe we have been lucky?

Right, they can follow the scent trail, but will they? Like I said, the gut pile is their preferred food. So if they come from downwind and smell the gut pile on its own, and the main carcass a little ways away with a shirt near it, they'll probably stay away from the main carcass. There's a lot of guts in a moose or elk, and the easiest thing for them to do is just leave the carcass alone.

Of course, moving an elk or moose whole is tough, but it seems to work alright for deer. I try not to leave anything for long though, and prefer to haul stuff out in the dark.

i would have a hard time enjoying the meat after p**sing on it. tell the wife cook up a roast honey thats were i p**sed. mm mm good.

PISSING ON YOUR GAME???? That is farking hilarious. You should thank the wolves for eating it, cuz no self respecting human would!!!!! I know the undershirt thing works, whether it actually kept animals away overnight or not, I dont know, but it was untouched and we were in wolf country.

Sorry buddy but I ain't ever coming over to eat Moose steaks at your place.

If you couldn't hike the meat up a tree, we would have pulled straws to see who got to sit by the fire until the quads got back.

Maybe next time drop a big steamy coiler on it. that oughta do! :runaway:

moose

Damn!!!!! I'm still laughing, farging near peed my pants. Please forgive my arrogance, but you pissed on your moose?????????????????? wow. and now you're pissed off that the wolves did their thing.

What?

So like, you all stood around in a big circle and had a piss on the calf?

How many were you, if you wanna kill the wolf just follow the puke trail.

Poor thing will most likely never hunt a moose again!:D

Still laughing.....

We shot a bull last Tuesday and after cleaning and skinning it we left it overnight with no problems. A "clean" shirt hung near the animal worked fine.

What's with all the pissing? That probably attracted the wolf.
