Your hunting with a friend, he shoots a big buck near the end of a cut block,
now the work begins. You help gut , drag it the 300+ yards up hill to the truck
you help skin it and take it to the butchers.
Is it not "Hunters Code" that you get half ?

Kinda like helping a buddy move , beer and pizza is standard issue.

No.

If it's a hunting party, it's whatever was decided in advance. If not, a simple: "thanks" and the expectation that he'd do the same for you should be enough.

If you are a hunter too, and at the end of the season you got nothing, it would be nice if he shared a substantial portion, but it shouldn't be expected.

That's why clear understandings about things like this in advance are so important.

Here in Ontario you can party hunt... So, if you're party hunting, you split the meat harvested with whoever participated in the hunt. IE they were present & hunting with you on the day the animal was harvested.

So, depending on where you are & what was agreed to in advance, that's what should happen...

Cheers
Jay

I don't think half is reasonable, but getting something should be expected.
The guys my dad always used to hunt with would spread it almost equally among the 5 guys who went each year, with any extras going to the shooter, so everyone got some each year.
At the same time i hunted with a guy and after fully intending on splitting much of the meat with him, when he got his deer i got a steak and a few pieces of jerky, needless to stay most of my deer this year will be staying in my own freezer.

Communication before any hunt just seems obvious to me. As for our regular group, shooter gets the loins, the rest is always equally shared. If I am with a new group or individual, it takes 30 seconds to get the record straight.

Not for me and my buddy. We each keep our own deer, regardless of the help required. In years when it's taken one of us more time than the other guy to get his deer, the first guy will drop off some meat for a few feeds in the meantime. Hasn't happened yet that we didn't both get a deer, but if my buddy didn't get one by the end of the season I'd be likely to give him some more, but not half. I've been part of groups that shared everything - worked fine because it was set out very clearly from the start, so everyone knew what to expect.

for myself, i have been hunting for more then 30 years, we always split equaly even if one member of the group can't be there.

My hunting buddy shot a deer on monday morning, Iwas home doing chores. Half of it is in my freezer. We have hunted together for almost 30 years and have had the 50/50 deal the whole time. Works for us.

Our camp splits it all equally amongst whoever was there and it is decided how it will be butchered ahead of time, usually just burger and pepperettes are what most of the guys want with a few chops and steaks for those that want it.

The key here is what ever is decided before hand. Our camp has a formula which I can't figure out nor care. It goes something like the group party hunts. Members who are out the day the deer are harvested get a bigger share. The ones who didn't answer the morning bell lost out some, but at end of week still get something. The rack goes to the one who first shot and hit the deer, not the one who finished it off. The proof will be at the recovery site. It has worked for years and hopefully for the next generations to follow.

I realize now we should of talked about it, however I was brought up with sharing the meat.
I figured it was a un written rule between us as hunters .
I myself would not expect anyone to help me drag a moose out of a swampy meadow or whatever
scenario it may be and not give them half of the meat.

Whats wrong with just helping out a buddy for the sake of helping. I've helped drag out animals for nothing lots of times. Then when i need help they help me no questions asked.

My buddy and I split everything 50/50, but I wouldn't say that it is "expected". Ducks, deer, grouse...everything just gets divvied up between us. You should always agree before the hunt what the meat share will be.

Most of my hunting is done alone these days for various reasons, and some related to this.

Seems even then people are expecting to get something from you, maybe it's the PA attitude shinning through again.;)

Around here it is pretty well understood that the shooter gets the head/horns and the meat is divided up amongst the group. However, deer are as thick as flys and everybody usually gets one each.
