Hi,

I am building a house and either a dog, fox, or coyote has been coming in at night or very early in the morning and marking his territory around the house. Not a big deal but when he hits my nice new board and batten siding it discolours it and I have to clean it etc.

I'm thinking fox because I have seen them in the area but it could be any of the above. Here are some pictures. I also found a spot where the animal dug in the soft ground right at the edge of the house and partially buried some scat that smelled strongly like dog s##t.

Do any of you know what this is and how I should keep it away from the house?

Thanks

The 23 cent solution works well for rural areas. Was the scat full of fur bits and whatnot? If it looked like the stuff you see on city sidewalks it's likely the neighbours dog. Maybe you knocked over his favorite tree when you put up your shack.

When foxes come around their urine smells pretty skunky. They like to mark things. It does not have the enduring power of skunk, but then what does? Does your new friend steal things like gloves? If so I say a fox. Not always easy to tell the difference between a fox/dog/coyote track especially those of similar size. Dog tracks are usually offset while the fox tracks follow along, so I am guessing a fox. If you open your front door and there is some scat right where you would put your first step as you leave the house then I would put money on it.

From the size of the prints it Looks kinda like my lab pups prints. He's about 65 lbs, so I would rule out a fox and guess that it's a yote or a coywolf. If so there are quite a few of the fellers here that would come and help deal with it. Ill tell ya the same thing as i tell my clients treat it like an animal control issue and just get some exclusion scent from an online animal control supply website and drop it at all the locations you notice him frequenting, if that doesn't work try an audio deturent, kinda like a trail cam that makes noise instead of snapping a pic.

Get an imitation fire hydrant out there.
If it gets sqwirted, then a hound of some sort.
If not, get a vermin cage and put some katnip in there.
Let the games begin..........bwahahahhahahaaahaaaa
Run kitty run.
See kitty run.
Kitty can run.
See how fast the kitty can run.
Awwwwwwwwww, poor kitty.

kamlooky phonics... lol

I'd say a cat too, a big cat. If you don't wish to employ the venerable 3 S rule, if you have an electric fence transformer, run a short loop and ground the ground cable well: Step two, before activating the system, smear bacon grease along the wire loop. Step three, set up game camera and calibrate so it takes pictures one second apart. Step four, activate system and enjoy the old fashioned style cartoon clip in the morning.

It's a cat.

In a hat.

Who took a shat.

Get a bat.

End of cat.

Today's answer brought to you by Dr. Seuss and the number 0

[Edit: I showed this post to an animal right lover... they nearly peed laughing.. so not meant as animal bashing... really, even with the bat in there]

Looks like a cat print. Cats have a fluffy ring around the pads on their feet. Those have a ri g made from the fur around the pads. That and they look like the prints my neighbors cat makes while walking through my yard.
