I am curious as to whether anyone else prays while hunting. I always throw out a request to St. Hubert (patron of hunters) before I start and I usually pray a rosary or two in the stand. I find hunting very prayerful and reflective activity, when I am not thinking murderous thoughts at the squirrel who keeps making noise or that tree branch that insists on looking like a deer. I am just curious as who else has this experience. I am a big believer in the medieval maxim God wrote two books scripture and nature.

I don't actually pray but I do like to appease the Hunting Gods so they will favor me with an animal(s) so my freezer gets filled up with tasty meat !

When in true wilderness, I occasionally stop and marvel at the wonderment around me, I breath it in, allow it to expand my soul...

But, I don't bother pleading with gods that do not have the ability to hear or care... I might have a conversation with a curious rock though.

Made me think of this scene in Conan lol

Conan : What gods do you pray to?
Subotai : I pray to the four winds... and you?
Conan : To Crom... but I seldom pray to him, he doesn't listen.
Subotai : [chuckles] What good is he then? Ah, it's just as I've always said.
Conan : He is strong! If I die, I have to go before him, and he will ask me, "What is the riddle of steel?" If I don't know it, he will cast me out of Valhalla and laugh at me. That's Crom, strong on his mountain!
Subotai : Ah, my god is greater.
Conan : [chuckles] Crom laughs at your four winds. He laughs from his mountain.
Subotai : My god is stronger. He is the everlasting sky! Your god lives underneath him.

I do the same. I also have a penchant for picking up odd rocks and sticks as mementos.

years ago while pushing a very remote heavy bush in algonquin i dropped my cheap yellow shooting glasses and got whacked in the eyes by a bush .was a few miles in and was heading out as it was getting dark. sat down and rinsed my eyes out with a fresh bottle of water and could not focus my eyes ..man i sat down and prayed to get me out of the bush safe without anymore incidents. about twenty minuits slowly heading back i fall between some leaves and get my ankle caught between the rocks as i feel almost to my waist. i used the rifle to pull my self out ,shut my mouth and made it back to camp and downed a few glasses of glenlivit 18 and thanked god for good scotch then shut my mouth. rinsed my eyes with eyewash and went to bed..woke up in morning finished bottle and stayed in for next three days.eyes got better and went out with my sunglases.

I don't pray per se; however, if I'm fortunate enough to harvest an animal I will spend a few moments reflecting and thanking the quarry for giving its life so I may sustain mine.

I don't normally pray period but..... there was a time two years ago when a momma bear with three cubs was standing at the base of my stand looking up........
