Hunting .177 vs .22

Mine too Harold, mine too......grin

Like I said, target of opportunity. Had slipped out of the house to plunk another magpie or what-have-you from the trees I had a deer hanging. Used the travel trailer as cover to sneak in to 51 yards of the where I had him hanging....happened to catch a glimpse of the 'yote sneaking in towards the deer, and took the 32 or 33 yard shot when he came square broadside.

I've tried the Kodiaks, and have been fairly happy with the results accuracy wise for sure. Beer cans are pretty easy to hit out to 120 yards or so, but the Crosman Premier's do almost as well, for less than half the cost. And, I can get Premiers locally.

For the amount I shoot this thing, pellet availability is definately a consideration.

Rated velocity, or actual velocity?

Rated at 1200fps I believe.

Across my chronograph, 3 feet from the muzzle:

Crosman Premiers - 1070
Beeman Moly - 1080
Beeman Kodiaks - 925
Gamo Magnums - 1072
Gamo lightweight something or others - 1255

What distance are you shooting them? I've taken crows with a .177 sub 500 ft/s pistol with shots to the chest. It was within 20 yards. They usually dive, and crash land, into the nearest bushes. If they are hit a little higher they just flop to the ground.

Hi: The nornal shot would be 35 yards. The boys informed me I was using crap pellets ( predator with the red point) etc. I bought a new scope and one piece mount and some of the pellets they recommended so I am just waiting to get some time to give it a try.Crow mag, rsw domes and I forget the third one I bought crossman something.

Predators are not crap pellets, they require FAC powered guns for better expansion.I found the Crow Mags not overly accurate.JSB Jumbo's are very good....................Harold

That is impressive KodiakHntr. I've killed raccoons with a 500 fps .22 springer at 10yards and thought that was amazing. But an animal of that size, well, I bow to you, sir.

Tonites Sunday supper

I got this fella tonite afterwork. Est range was 12yds. He was crouched under some thick bush, all I could see was the side of his head and eye, I aimed, squeezed the trigger and he toppled over. Took more work getting him out from under the bushes with snowshoes on. I placed on the branches for the pic.

Its funny though, the only reason I tried it is because the day before when we strung the deer up my buddy that was with me asked if I'd be upset if he sproinked a pellet into the deer after we peeled the hide in the ribcage to see if it'd punch a rib.

Told him I was already planning to try it, but I was going to do it with the hide on. 15 yards yielded two hide+meat+rib+almost through the second rib penetrations with the crosman premiers. A beeman kodiak likely would of punched the second rib.

If the deer had still been warm and fresh, as opposed to it being a few hours after being shot and stiffened up pretty good likely it would of been a bit better yet with penetration.

I've zero doubt in my mind that inside of 15 yards with surgical placement that were it legal, a guy could kill a deer with one of these things. Not that I'd attempt it, but I'm pretty sure in a survival situation it would work better than trying to jump on his back from a tree and bite him to death.

??? I am shooting a model 34 177 1000 fps that is a pal gun??
accuracy is not my worry right now I need something with some wack to it

Hello everyone I want to share my experience on the .177vs.22,which where done on soaked telephone directories to test the penetration. The distance is from 10 meters, and here are the results:Gamo1250.22=696 pages,Diana350.22=599pages,Diana36.177=560,Hatsan55S reduced to 11fpe=506pages,WeihrauchHW80.22=506pages,and finally the Gamo Shadow.22=432pages.The results show clearly the high penetration of the .177,over the .22.But hunting is sort of differant,the.177 needs much better pellet placement then the .22 because of the narrower wound channel. The .22 may not have the penetration of the .177 but the wound channel is bigger when the fpe is the same in both calibres, plus that it will be wider leading to more bleeding. My conclusions are that the .177 has the penetration, and the .22 the bigger wound.

.177 is the penetration master

I have taken a lot of animals with my .177's. All this .22 for fur.....177 for feather/target is a load of bunk. I shot and killed 6 raccoons one evening with my 860 fps (cronographed) BSA lightning.... all one shot kills... it was like someone turned their switch off and they didn't even flop. Many skunks and coons have fallen to my .177's. Yes shot placement is critical but that doesn't mean it isn't with a .22.

I have a video of me shooting from 30 yards through 7 inches of water in a washer fluid container. The Crosman Premier pellet penetrates both sides.

air guns are the most fun.

Chris the BSA lightning and all airguns in the 14-15 fpe weather .177 or .22 can hunt. They simply pevail in differant sections of ballistics, youre .177 has much better penetration then the .22 Lightning on quarrel, but will not expand as well as the .22 and create the wound that the .22 can leading to more bleeding. The wider the wound, the less precise youre pellet placement must, even if its slightly. In the 14-15fpe category both do the job and there isnt really a direct need for the .22 though either the .177 works just fine

Although I agree the .22 has more "punch" I have found that none of the pellets expand like I/we think they do. I am admittedly an .177 fan. I have shot a lot of bars of soap to check expansion of .177 pellets. I find than NONE of them expand enough to call it expansion. I have shot JSB predators and domed, CP Priemiers, (hp and domed) Daisey pointed, wadcutters. RN, RWS... and the list goes on (I have a pellet addiction)

I will say that I don't have proof on animals about the expansion as my .177 zip right through...

I agree with you on that, airgun velocity is too low to help a pellet expand enough or at all, thats wear the.22 comes in simply because its simply larger in diameter thats all helping to create a larger wound.Crow magnums are suppose to expand better then most pellets I havent tried the out though. As I said before the .177 at the 14-15 fpe range is fine for hunting, thats my opinion.

Just curious on everyone's thoughts on choosing an air rifle for hunting.

Back to the original question.....

One thing I'd consider when buying an air rifle for hunting is the amount of time your going to have before a shot and whether or not you need to be stealthy.

Are you going to have enough time to pump it or do you need to break it, load it and fire? My old .177 crossman will kill any small game but pumping it would scare anything but a grouse away.

If I was hunting rabbits where you need to get a quick shot off I'd like a nice spring loaded .22, more punch and fast to load and fire.

As far as expansion is concerned, who cares? He's not hunting moose with it and still there's a big debate on whether or not bullet expansion really matters. Hit it in the head, game over.
