Earlier this month I put my Winchester 94, 30-30 manufactured in 1908 on the EE, no real interest and as I was leaving town I took it down. After thinking about it I decided to hunt my property with it this year, both Whitetail and Moose. Most shots are limited to under 100 yards. I’ve never hunted with it before, but it is in great shape, mirror barrel, crisp action. I will have my 30-06 along for field hunting as well. I have a young friend who grew up with my sons and have decided that at the end of the day I will bequeath it to him. He loves the old 94, I have never hunted with a lever rifle before and am looking forward to it, it will also be the first year my 11 year old grandson will be able to hunt deer as Alberta is lowering the age to 10 this year.

I was fortunate enough this year to make a good friend. We had talked much about the 1894, 30 WCF, and I made my case on why I am so enamoured with them. This good friend has a 1914 production Winchester 1894. He came out for an hunt with me and brought the 94 along. I landed a nice whitetail buck with the rifle in a narrow valley near a running creek at about 110 yards. It was an excellent day afield.

It sounds like the boys are very lucky to have someone keeping them in mind for such an experience. I hope your hunts this year were fruitful. Love to hear some stories.

Cheers,

We haven’t taken a moose, maybe because our neighbours got a group together and hunted our boundaries and adjacent properties. They thought it was great as they bagged six moose and were trying for eight. They literally destroyed the local population that beds on our property. It will take years for the population to rebound and we decided not to fill our tag, the season still runs to November 30th. In addition to bulls they were also harvesting cows. My son, grandson and I did get our deer however. All three were in a crop field, too far for the 30-30. My young friend however is still getting the 1894, I found my eyes just aren’t good with open sights anymore. This age thing just sucks, however I can walk forever with just a few aches here and there. As my father once paraphrased to me, you only have pain if you’re alive. On the whole it was a great season, the highlight of which was my grandson taking a doe at just a little over 100 yards with his 6.5 Creedmoor Sig Sauer Cross. He sat on the ground, rested his left elbow on his knee and took a perfect double lung shot, it couldn’t have been a more perfect shot. It was the night where the northern lights lit the whole sky in red as we processed the doe. I told him the hunting gods were celebrating his first deer with the red lights. His smile was priceless.
