Hi to all,

I'm looking for pros and cons of the Marlin SBL or the Trapper.

This would be for hunting purposes in the bush; Moose, Deer and Bears.
One spot has a maximum shooting distance of 200 meters so I don't feel I'd need a sub moa bolt gun and wouldn't shoot unless I'm very confident.

Would the trapper loose too much accuracy and velocity over the the SBL which is only 2" less?

My Girlfriend tells me that 2 more inches is always better, but what about it's not the length but how you use it?

Thanks in advance.

a shorter barrel usually means better accuracy less velocity as 45/70 has a rainbow trajectory I went for 18.5 in barrel it is fine in close cover good luck

I absolutely LOVE my Marlin 45-70 SBL. I've upgraded the to the Happy Trigger to remove the slop, Wolf Hammer Spring, Bear Proof Ejector, & Aluminum Magazine Follower. I must say with my handholds it's a very accurate shooter. I bought mine to use as a bush gun without optics. I like the quick acquisition of targets. I honestly do keep my shots to a maximum of 200yards or less. You must shoot the rifle lots to know your impacts at the different yardages you will be shooting though.

With those requirements I'd go with the 1894 sbl or csbl (44 mag or 357 mag). I'm currently looking for the 357 because ammo is affordable and it can fill the hunting and self defense rolls as well as for plinking. It's also a half pound lighter than the 1895.

I had 2 45-70's
A marlin lever action and a Baikal sxs rifle.
Loved them both,
But the first thing that you must do is make sure you have a really good recoil pad!!
Take from the voice of experience.

I absolutely love my sbl,but I tried a trapper model with. Bit shorter barrel at the gun range and I'm not acan, too short, much louder and much more felt recoil.I was not impressed with the way it shot hsm 430 grain bear loads ,what. Wallop out of that short little trapper.

I just bought a Marlin 1895 45/70 Dark Series, thanks for the recommendation “weatherby2” should be here late next week. I like the idea of the shorter barrel and option to put a muzzle brake if desired to tame it down. The black will also look sweet with my custom Black/Silver Crocodile hide stock wrap and sling I used to have on my SBL.
