So my wife and i are talking about the idea of teaching our kids to hunt,

I was wondering how old everyone started teaching there kids.
And what steps did you take?

I was about ten I believe. My dad started by teaching me to shoot and getting me a pellet gun to practice with in the backyard (back when that wasn’t an alarmist thing to do lol). Safety was taught first. Then I think we went for grouse; my dad made me carry the pellet gun the first time we went out, but he let me shoot the shotgun lol .... I’m not sure of the reason I had to carry the pellet gun in retrospect .. probably more to due with not wanting to own two shotguns and him not seeing much use for a .22 at the time.

Ya I was 8 or so when dad bought me the 760 pumpmaster and I used that baby every second I could.(He also took it away a few times). But I still have it above the mantle and it’s full of great memories!

Just remember to put your kids first, i always made the trip about them. Lots of trips never even fired a shot. When he was a little older i bought him an airsoft gun to learn on...then i had him teach his little sister.

Unfortunately when he was old enoughto get his hunting license he lost interest...2-3 years later it hit him hard and he was back in.

Let your kids lead you...

I have a 10 year old girl. She has been with me countless times over the years. Start them with something fun and energetic to keep the interest up.
I believe around age 5 she really started to come along. I remember shooting a crow across the field about 150 yds. I shot, crow fell over and i hear Emma all excited " good shot dad!"
The memories you will make are priceless.

I've got 3 kids. Oldest (just turned 13yrs) is doing his firearms and hunting course this April. <insert excited dad here>

I started by getting them to like eating game and discussing where it comes from. This can happen really young, 2-3 yrs.
(I make a mean venison stew!)

BB guns and pop cans at about 5 (under lots of supervision)
The rest depends on your kid's personality...

My oldest wants to hunt Grouse because he knows he can't sit still LOL!!

^^^^ THIS ^^^^

Make 2 types of hunting trips
1) Hunt without kids and do your thing
2) Hunt with kids and do their thing

If they come, its all about them!

Mine was about twelve when we started going duck hunting, He loved it, but one morning while sitting in the blind a bull moose walked out, I made a couple of calls, and it came within about thirty yards of us before it ran off. He was hooked after that for sure.

My daughter was petting the deer I got last year, she was just over 2.

I was 3 or 4 when I started shooting pop cans with the 22 with dad, my daughter already has a single shot savage 22LR in the cabinet for her.

I was out in the bush with dad when I was 8 or so, hunting at 15 because the laws in our province at the time did not have anything younger, if the age were 12 I would have been deer hunting at 12, was shooting the 30-06 at 12 but I filled out at a young age, lots to absorb the recoil.

I was around age 5 when I started hunting with my father and grandfather. Since we didn't have a retriever, it became my job to fetch the fallen geese and ducks. My father and grandfather didn't just let me tag along, they included me on the hunt (including the messy stuff, pulling heads, plucking, dressing deer, etc.) which likely contributed to my interest in hunting. I was already shooting a .22 at this point so grouse were fair game as well. I was very interested, so I took the hunter safety course at the earliest possible age and have been carrying a rifle and hunting since.

My daughter took her kids hunting as soon as they were out of diapers and could walk
never to young to start teaching them, start with fire arm safety, and teaching them outdoor skills such as tracking and identifying different species
and move up to taking them bird hunting where they get lots of action, big game hunting is boring to young children

Both of my girls have accompanied me while hunting starting at 2 years old. They ride around in my backpack and chatter into my ear the whole time. My youngest wasn't sure about killing a grouse until I explained to her that it was made of meat, and now every time we see one all I hear is "Dad! Kill it!!!"

Just found this one, makes me happy that my son is / has started them young. Although the guns in my safe are disappearing more and more as they get older.
