hunting alone

Well, one thing will settle the thread in every capacity discussed, solo hunting pics. Will weed out the good advice from the bad, really..

scored 165 , 4pt typical.... one extremely stormy rememberance day in BC region 3 , hunting solo ,on foot, with a doe tag in an area I was told was long shot out of decent bucks LOL
Just me and my favorite lee enfield .303 getting er done ;)
holding camera at arms length in pic 2 hehehe

After 50 years of hunting when I hunted alone I got my deer and moose every year and when I party hunted I got nothing except aggravation and the opportunity to referee drunken fights in camp.
Tired of the drunks who used hunting trips as an excuse to get away from home for a week cheat on their wifes by picking up bar trolls and bringing them to camp and generally abuse alcohol, be jerks and spoil everyone elses trip.
Tired of the idiots who took a "26er" or "40 pounder" up into the tree stand with them "to keep warm" while carrying a loaded gun with one up the spout.
After getting mad and knocking a long time friend stone cold out on the floor after he refused to turn down the ghetto blaster at 2:30 am in the morning and then became belligerent and assaultive (didn't work out so well for him) I gave up the hunt camp scene.
When I'm hunting 1 is company and 2 is a crowd.

Here's a recent one I got while hunting alone.

Shot it through the lungs freehand with my 300 WSM at close to 200 yards, dragged it to the truck, gutted it myself while keeping an eye for a grizzly reported to be in the area.

Pulled it aboard myself, and headed home all out of breath, but with a smile from ear to ear.

After I pulled the hide off, it weighed 128 pounds, not bad for a white tail from here in South East BC.

I won't profess to be a hot shot hunter, I love hunting and do so for the main reason , to provide a steady diet of quality meats, birds and fishes, harvested by me, my way.

the buck in my pics above was my new hunter "graduation deer". All my hard work and learning from my mistakes, with gear and tactics, and yes trying out hunting partners/groups, over 8 years of hunting, it all came together on that solo hunt over the rememberance day weekend. I loaded the jimmy, left details and map with the wife and off I went for the weekend. Felt like a warrior when I got home let me tell ya ;)

Well; congrats of the Grad then. Nice buck with a cool gun; LE is about the only thing missing from my stable, don't flame me though...my son has 3 or 4.
I'm a Ross man myself.
And I like your attitude about hunting too. Mine is quite similar to yours

I'm really lucky in that I've small acreage in the country...on the creek...with absentee owners all around. So they want you to keep an eye out for BS & trouble...go ahead and hunt all you want. So I can hunt right from home, awesome.
Invariably someone invites themselves out, shows up with an Ultra-magnum ( fair amount of houses with reach of a big magnum, and thick-ish bush to compound the problem) and wants to go driving. It's a walk only hunting area...
Just easier alone.
...and I'mm sure not a creature will stir without your knowing! Sounds like a great gig.

I used to hunt weekends with my outlaws since I owned a quad and a truck west of Nanton Alberta every year and mule deer north of Drumheller. We shot 12 deer one fall and they hit 6 of them in the butt. Not one of them ever sighted in a gun in 25 years that I know of and the one guy would not throw away a cartridge case until the head separated usually when he missed the first shot. The same person couldn't tell the difference between a mule deer and a whitetail after he had laser surgery either. I used to love weekday hunting by myself all the more and that's when I usually filled my buck tags.

Whitetails, Muledeer, Moose, cougars, raccoons & coyotes.
It's a pretty sweet spot. 15 minutes from the city too. Even got it before Real Estate went through the roof.
But OP , it is tough to get started on your own. 45ACP said it best...8 years. A mentor would be preferable.
If you asked all of us about mentors or relatives acting as such, betcha it'd run 80 - 90 % had one.
Mine you, toughest part is once it's on the ground IMO. And hate to say it...YouTube the dressing of whatever game you are after. Powerful tool, the ability to watch someone who really knows their stuff and records it for your perusal.
And good luck, eh

it took me 4 years of bumbling around as a new hunter before I got my first buck on my 5th year as a hunter. It wasn't till the deer above on the 8th season, and while I was solo hunting, that I felt I came into my own as a hunter. this is why I always refer to that one as my graduation deer ;)

Racoon??!! Tokguy, you gotta be in Southern AB. No raccoon that I know of north of Lethbridge, at least none ever reported to me. We were discussing this just the other day, lots o f guys form out east miss it. If you got 'em, live it up. I LOVED 'coon hunting, but does Alberta allow night hunting them?

Rkr, where are you?
Although I have several hunting partners throughout the year, I usually hunt alone. I don't have to match schedules with anyone and I hunt everyday during the season. One of my best hunting partners is my wife, easiest to match schedules. I often take beginners out, after I see them at the range, but I don't ever intend to hunt during their hunt (I made that mistake one my wife's first deer).
I'd rather hunt with my wife, any day, though.
I'm from south SK

I do believe both Ontario and NS allow night hunting of racoons with 22 rimfire and dogs by night.

I don't think Alberta has the same regulation, but I could be wrong too.

Coon came through the other night and got 6 chickens, exotic one's too. He couldn't breech the fence ( chain link fence stapled to railway ties ) but a group of pullets had taken to sleeping nestled under the edge of a tie. He reached through the fence and wrung the neck / strangled 6 in their sleep! Tried to gorilla the links apart in a few spots, all he did was change them from a diamond shape to almost round...coons are sure strong!
Beggars belief...got the bbl traps out now & another half dozen coming from Marty Senecer in Hays. The yard is going to look like it was carpet bombed with traps. Can't catch a cat or dog with a bbl / egg trap .... go big, I say.
Dad's been getting the odd coon North of the ' Hat too ( I'm east on Ross Creek ). They are becoming more common though, been here 10 years snd last year was the 1st time we have had trouble. Now it's regular it seems.
Filthy creatures...
