Hi, im just looking for any info on hunting and fishing on and around gambier island.

I have a job there and will live on the Island year round. Im moving there for may 1st.

Im wondering how hunting works there and in surrounding areas. Also fishing as well.

I guess ill have to read all the regs anyway but would like a quick rundown if anyone knows.

Both salt and fresh water fishing and as for hunting on the island it self.

Also how far north will i have to go before i can start to get into sheep or goat hunting. I hope to do that once im a BC resident

I get winter off work but have to stay on the island/only gone for a few days at a time (i do have 3 weeks vacation that i can use to travel BC to do some hunting and fishing.)

You might be regulated to using a shotgun only for fur.
I'd suggest you git a Relic boat, not the S.S. Minnow.
Sea water fishing is a blast.
Never know what under water creature is going to nab yer lewr.

Thanks, ive been watching fishing videos from the howe sound area, lots of cool stuff there for sure.

and yeah i plan to get a boat this summer. Some of the people that ive been talking to have been saying 18' 100hp min. Im allowed upto 26' at the dock it will be parked at

Marina parking and car parking on the main land are covered by my job.

Ev my boss has gone hunting there I will ask him and fill you in.

He says once you get to the top of the road to the mountain top, you are good to go hunting. Rifles are good to go. Of course you need your core, etc.

Thanks man that sounds pretty good.

I used my NS hunters safety course for my BC credentials. I needed to do that for getting my small game license when i went up north in the summer.

So i can buy any tags and licenses in BC once im a resident

You will need to be a resident for 6 months for a BC Hunting Lic.
Also for Fresh Water too.
Sal####er is a federal Lic and the Salmon stamp is extra.
Unless you are a Federal Employee ( RCMP, Cnd.Forces) I do not know of a Warri around for the 6 month residency.
You can look up the Regs on the Internet as in BCHunting Reg.ca and it should pop up and give you lots of reading.

Ohh ok maybe it is 6 months I'm not sure. I was going off having to change my drivers license and my car plate after 30 days. I thought once i had a BC drivers license i was a resident

Thanks guys..this why i made this thread

I did buy a small game hunting and freshwater fishing license with a salmon stamp last summer as a nova scotian. But i didnt need any tags for that.

Ill read up on it

A friend bought a property there for camping and hunting. I asked him after the season how it went and he said the neighbours were so close he was scared to shoot.

"Looks like I have to get a bow," he said. "I didn't tell him I'd like to hunt the place. I've got my dad's old .22 Hornet. He slew carloads of island deer with that rifle.

Best to read and re-read the regulations.
Many many mewns ago Bowen Island was shotgun only.
The two islands compare in size.

Get your boaters licence tewt sweet.

There are serious sweeping rockfish, lingcod and salmon fishing closures on the South coast.

I looked over the synopsis briefly last night and gambier doesn’t seem to be mentioned in any of the no shooting or caliber restriction maps, so it looks like you’re good to go with hunting. The usual discharge distances from dwellings etc still apply and you might want to check with whatever municipal office is there for any bylaws that are in place.
