Hunting and shooting with kids??

Just wondering what some of your opinions are...
When I was really young I started off just driving around back roads and old logged out roads.

Then walking down roads when I could walk
Then it was in the bush and try to get as far in as I could... ( always was a outdoors kid)
Now that Iv been married for a couple years now and my wife is far from an outdoors lady or into hunting or firearms but I still love her to death!!!

When do I start bringing my little guy?
Don't get me wrong he's only one but...
I don't see a problem with going out hunting and driving around while he's in the car? And showing him birds?
What's have you done?
 
Kids let you know pretty quick what they are interested in. At first it will just be the fact that you are spending time together will have him enthusiastic. As he gets a bit older he will let you know in a number of ways what he wants. A lot of whining means not interested for eg. I was one for three on hunters with my kids, luck of the draw. Make it fun and who knows? Good luck.
 
My wife (whom hunts too) and I took our daughter in a chest carrier when she was less then a year old. Whomever was hunting at the time was in the lead with the .22 and the other followed 50 ft or so behind with the kid. We also started a hunting journal for her.

Never had any of my own but my friend's kids and my girlfriends kids were always brought along on hunts where the weather wasnt too cold or severe. They get turned off pretty easy when they are cold or wet. Pick and choose your days and they will love it. I started hunting with my grandfather when I was about 4 or 5.
 
My youngest started coming with me for grouse, rabbits and geese since he was 6 years old.

It is a great honor to introduce kids into hunting and shooting. From the safe handling of a firearm , target shooting and finally the first hunt. Your reward comes when you witness the excitment and pride of the young hunters first kill. Something you and the youngster will never forget.
When your young one is ready (you will know) work with him and teach him right, many memories will follow.
 
I brought my 8 year old daughter out for the first time a few weeks ago. We were only going for grouse and luckily we got one. She loved the hunting but wasn't too sure of what to think of the dead bird. It was the first dead animal she's ever seen, so hopefully next time it will go a little smoother.
 
All of my kids started hunting with me around four years of age... just as I did with my father... they were very excited and interested... my son shot his first grouse at four with a Benji HB20 pistol... they are all grown up now, but we have many fond memories of times spent together in the wilderness when they were young... and they still shoot and hunt today.

4 or 5 for mine. I spring them out of school for deer in ON which makes them "cool" or unique at school and me a HERO! Start them early, as the opposite ### can be stronger than a parent! I am now hunting as a Guide for my 2 Boys and only want them to meet with success, rather than experiencing another "harvest". Good luck and get busy.
 
Mine took me since I was a newborn, at the end.
Or near the end of his hunting , I returned the favor and took the wheel (Yes we road hunted)
Lots of memorys , many roads that no longer exist.

I still hunt in the places he showed me...even though they logged the whole spot last year.
And I did get my cow elk.

Take them , Haul mom with you if need be.

My boy was not even a year old
First day of late season Dad dident feel well enough to go...(19 years ago now)
I took my wife and son, at first legal hunting light on the first lease road I went in...bull moose down:d

I hunt with my boy to this day(and his Grandpa is proudly looking down on us)
 
When children are introduced to hunting at a young age they don't need so much coaching to get thru that "ewwww it's blood" phase... Show them with confidence from the start to build there confidence and you'll make a lot of fond memory's.

You nailed it, it's just life to them then. At two or three, they don't have opinions yet, if dad's happy, they're happy. And it sticks.
 
My parents took me on my first hunting trip when I was two. Apparently I didn't like it and decided to walk home one day. My dad figured I'd get scared and come back to the camper in a couple minutes, but when I didn't, he came running after me. He says I had walked close to a mile down the road before he caught up. I don't know where we were, but somewhere out in the bush in BC. I guess it stuck, because I'm still not much of a hunter. I think I'm going to have to start soon though, my 3 year old daughter talks about hunting already after seeing pictures at my parent's place. She had her first range trip when she was about 8 months with my wife and I.

I started bringing my daughter on spring bear hunts at age 3. She's 6 now and we hunted moose a couple weeks ago. She always has a good time. I'll start bringing my son for bear next spring.
 
i started late with my kids, as i started late myself, but both daughters love being at the range with me( had to start somewhere) they both have a 22, my 13 year old has a ruger 10/22 and wanting to move to something bolt and a bit bigger, and my 10 year old has a savage rascal with scope, they have both been shooting for about a year, so far just wanna be range shooters, hoping next year they may wanna head into to bush with me, but for now, just happy we have something for us to do as a family that we all love :)
