Hey everyone...I'm planning on using the same stand for both bear and deer this year. Bear season goes from Sept 1st - Nov 4th, and deer goes from Oct 23 - Nov 19th.

Does anyone have any suggestions on bear bait to use early that will not bother the deer, or even better get them coming in early? Do bears go for cracked corn or beef feeder? I don't have access to apples until close to deer season.

thanks for your input

You’re better off to feed them in separate spots if at all possible. Bears are after calories and aren’t fussy in what form, they’ll pick up as much as you put down and out compete your deer.
As long as you keep feeding they won’t go to sleep, we’ve had them on deer baits into December here in Saskatchewan. It’s good and cold here by then.
They might stop if you quit feeding any grain products and just keep good leafy alfalfa for the deer to eat. Not sure if alfalfa is grown everywhere.

My plan, was to bait for bears early Sept, hopefully drop one....then stop the baiting for a couple of weeks before putting out the apples for the deer. If the bears come back for the apples, I'll drop another (we're allowed two bear/year) If i can get two bear and a deer that should fill the freezer nicely. not sure if fryer grease early in Sept would deter the deer from coming in in Oct.

I've seen lots of bears out hiking, but I only ever shot one bear while hunting, so still in the learning phase

My experience with bear and deer at the same bait pile was the bear drove the deer off and quickly ate the apples and alfalfa I has using for bait, once they found the bait they we’re always there. Didn’t matter how much time I let it cool off, could leave it dry for a week or more to see if the bears would move on. They were back as soon as I put out apples again, we aren’t allowed to bait bears in bc so it just blew a spot up. The deer just went elsewhere, the trailcam I had out showed almost no deer coming in to a spot with lots of pass through traffic.

My experience with corn is I'm just feeding the raccoons and blue jays in my area. The bears and deer do come out but like I mention the coons and blue jays will be the one to feast in my area.

What works for me are deer apples. I drop two truck loads. First load is the Thanksgiving weekend. We've always tag out either my bear or deer on the following weekend with a crossbow. Then drop a second load of apple two weeks later and gets ready for the first Monday of Nov. Been successful for both bear and deer every year for the last seven years.

My cousin has thrown in the towel and has decided to go the apple route and skip the corn this coming deer season. He's tired of tag soup while I feast on bear or venison chili.
