Anyone hunt big game like bear and elk with a black powder rifle?

With a 150gn charge and .50cal I would think at less than 100m it should be more than enough to do the job.

is it ?

here is a video to show a muzzle on a large elk http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FcalZw0vvmI .

For bear i cant find anything other than small bears.

Thats why ive bean looking in2 muzzles for a bit now as well. Ide like to have one rifle that fits my style of hunting and I think a muzzle is what I would like. I just want to make sure I can use it for the larger stuff as well as deer.

edit- wasting time on the internet here saturday afternoon. but i came across this neat vid as well. reminds me of the moose hunter but ide find this a little more intidimating http://www.huntvids.com/video/110/Bow-hunting-elk-gets-too-close

There was a long time when it was a muzzleloader or nothing. Even in modern time people have tagged every animal out there with one.

A good .50 will do for anything on this continent though I might look into a double .58 for bear in tight bush. Practice a lot and make sure that you know the trajectory limitations.

Yep, I've killed moose to 210 yards with a 50 cal ML, this year was only a 120 yard shot on my bull. But my wife and I've killed lots of bear, moose, elk, deer, caribou, stag, antelope and a cougar with a 50 cal.

Jeremiah Johnson and Bear Claw Chris kilt plenty a bars with a Hawken, though it didn't work out so good for Hatchet Jack,LOL.

"lt is a good rifle, and kilt the bar that done kilt me.Anyway, l am dead.

Yours truly, Hatchet Jack.''

I've only shot deer with mine, but it works well. As with any animal, its all shot placement. My load of 85gr FFFG and a 250SST runs 1800 MV...

Shockey has over 30 different species with his (IIRC), but you need his powder to do that...;)

Did it all with a Knight, but now if you don't have a TC the bullets will all bounce off.

I've got a 50 cal Omega, shot 4 deer, 2 bears all one shot kills. My recipe for destruction is 3 pyrodex pellets (150gr eq.), 250gr sst, 209 primer, hit em in the "sweet spot" it's game over. I'm not familar with the lyman mustang, but IMO any of the modern ML's should be alright (TC, Knight, Remington etc.)

That one gets my vote for the best of all the MLs. T/C's lifetime warranty to who ever owns the gun is hard to beat too.

I should have added that for the bears I try to shoot for the off side shoulder bust em down right where they stand, taking out the lungs/heart in the process. Even if they manage to lumber off their not going very far.

hi...i hunt deer and black bears with a 50 cal. 100 grs. pyrodex and 300 grs. hornady xtp
or speer gold dot, or nosler h.p. in sabots. all are extremely good.
