I have a little aluminum boat (duckboat) with a 9 hp motor.
i want to do a camo job on it myself.

I do not have a garage or fancy equipment so it will be a backyard job.

Advice? Paint? What if I went solid green?

Aluminum is very hard to paint. Make sure you get the proper primer. Wash it down the best you can. Give it a light sanding then wash again with a water vinagar mix, then prime.

if you wanted to do it with rattle cans which would take a long time look at walmart they have this flat textured paint it doesn't give off a glare and it has sticks realy good it also comes in a wide range of natural colors.what I would try after you have a base color on is make stencils or use willows or reeds and put them on then spray over them when you take them off you have a reverse patern of the branch works ok doesn't matter how pretty it is though does it.

Any boat shop will have aluminum boat cleaner. Use it to prep your boat. Rinse well and let it dry in the sun.

As for paint, I cant comment. Ive just cleaned them, never painted one.

Krylon makes flat paint in all the camo colors. I made 2 stencils. First, I painted the boat entirerly flat black. The first stencil was "jagged" at the top to look like cattails, and I left some vertical "bars" to simulate "shadows" between the stalks. Painted over the first stencil with dark green. The second stencil was approx 1/3 taller then the first. Cut out lots of diagonal and curved lines. (approx 3/4-1" wide) I cut out lots of vertical strips approx 4" from the top of the last stencil. These "strips" went right to the gunnels. Paint over the second stencil with a light brown. (i used "field khaki") I don't have any pics of the boat but it was good for a home job. The stencils were made out of bristol board. Do you have a blind for the boat? I did my boat with the blind frame on it so everything matched.

I find most people paint their duck boats too dark and they stick out like a sore thumb.

Faded o/d and a light coloured mud brown seems about right.
