Hunting boots for long walks

Do yourself a favor and check the MEC in Montreal. Hikers and hunters have a lot in common.

While there, check out the new Zamberlan Tofan. I had to return mine recently, because they don't come in Wide. I did it with a heavy hart though. Two 100 k hikes with 60 pound backpack and not one blister, not a drop of water in it....! Never happened to me in 30 years of hiking and hunting. I am now in the process of breaking into my new LOWA Ranger wide. I can already tell you that Tofan was a better boot. Pity they don't come in wide.

By the way, when I tried to explain why I am returning my Zamberlan, the MEC guy just said no need to explain and took it back! He actually said they should have sent me out with a proper pair of boots and apologized for not doing it!! How many of these stores are left in Canada?

I wouldn't spent $0.01 at MEC, but that's me.

MEC doesn't support hunting or any thing to do with hunting so why should we hunters spend our money at a place that is against what we do.

Source? I get that they choose not to sell hunting-specific gear, but after all it is a free market. That doesn't mean they're "anti-hunting" as an organization.

I looked at Meindl boots, but it seems that they don't make them in size 13.
And I will definitely try some Danners.
Thanks everyone for your opinions, keep'em coming!

The problem I had with Meindl's that they make one width and then add and insole to create a less than acceptable fit.
I currently have 5 pairs of Danners

I've used Redheads from Bass Pro the last few years, and they've been just fine. Very comfortable for me. I have no idea how they are if you have foot challenges, though.

They were a supporter of the Alberta grizzly hunts being closed. That's enough for me, I'll spend my money else where and gladly pay more to know that I'm not helping anti hunting.

I wear Rocky or 5.11 side zip duty boots. I can wear them all day long in the bush and my feet are never sore. They make them waterproof too. Danner makes a very good product also. It all depends on how much you want to spend I guess but really, if your feet are in rough shape after a long walk your time outdoors will be cut short so I would say get the better boots and pay up.

Try on as many different types and makes as you can and try whichever feels best to you, as long as the brand isn't reputed to be poor quality. What suits someone else may not fit you. E.g. Timberland thinks feet are shaped like mine, Rocky has a different idea. I don't think Timberland makes great boots, but they make them o.k. and they make them to fit me very well, so I buy them. Some people speak well of Rocky boots - I'll take their word for it but every pair I've ever tried on didn't fit me comfortably so I don't even bother trying them on anymore.

The best footwear of any sort I have ever worn are my Atlberg Clubman Classic motorcycle boots. I could wear them for hiking and hunting and they'd be as good for that as anything else I've had but they are expensive so I save them for riding. If I had the money I'd order some of their military or hiking boots. http://www.altberg.co.uk/

Cooler weather sees me wearing North Face hiking boots. Incredible support and good if you are covering a lot of miles in the day. They are uninsulated so when the temperature drops a bit, my Danners stay on my feet and I don't look back.

I have the Danner Canadians. Unbelievably comfy, tons of support, no break in necessary...I just bought mine this year and they have easily over 300km on them. No blisters, warm yet breathable...I couldn't ask for a better boot!!

only time i wear lace up boots is when climbing when there is snow, long walks is either running shoes or rubber boots depending on dry or wet.

+1 Danners

I dont know about the hunting ones they make but the military ones are top notch and will serve you great. I have been in the infantry for 15 years, danners all the way. They have been the go to boot for military for decades, they know how to make a boot.
