hello everyone.

I'm a new, young hunter wanting more and better experience. I have my PAL for a few years I know all of the gun safety and rules. also have my own gear to go hunting with and license of course. I just do not have a big car to fit anything bigger then small game (maybe a turkey)

I have gone a few times hunting only shooting a duck and small game.. I really want to go this year with more fun friendly people.

I'm located in SouthWestern Ontario.

if anyone is willing to teach young a guy and have fun feel free to pm me.

I would like to meet and get to know each other first before going out.

thanks for reading.

Where abouts in southwestern Ontario are you Joe?

Well my man, you’re a little outside my neck of the woods, but you’re starting off on the right foot. Always glad to see another hunter getting started. Expect some Nutterz in your area will chime in shortly.

I found joining an established group to be difficult, lots of unspoken rules, one group I went out with only once, had a rule no alcohol. I show up with enough for a good time and was promptly told to pour it out or lock it in the truck and turn over the keys. Needless to say, I left the next morning. Just fined one or tow guys and do some day trips, if all is good move on to over nighters. The group will form naturally from there, if a no alcohol group is what you want then you will find it, if a good time hunting trip is the ideal time, the party will be there to. Work hard play hard is our groups motto, some trips are all hunting and some trips are all party, what ever the mood of the group is.

So yo gave up a chance to hunt because you couldn't drink?

Hey. I am by no means an expert but I would be interested in co-learning if nothing else comes up for you. And if you find someone experienced I wouldn't mind joining.

Id check the Ontario Out of Doors mag. It usually has offers for potential hunt camp joinees. Usually North of Toronto. Usually not drinkers and serious hunters. I am a serious hunter, however after we get back to our camp i do have a few cold ones. We always lock up the firearms when we come in for supper. Alcohol and firearms dont mix and should never be accepted as ok. If a camp wants to sit in, play cards and get $hit faced, then so be it, but leave the firearms locked up.
I have children that are part of our hunt camp. They want to learn and enjoy the hunt like everyone else. Stay safe, learn the area and follow the camp rules for safety.

if as an adult, I went hunting with a group and they were so anal and so filled with the desire to dictate how another man should behave....... ya, I'd be walkin away from that group too.
I've met some folks over the years that seem to think every hunting group needs a "boss" and that there needs to be "rules" that extend beyond being an ethical hunter and practicing flawless firearms safety. There are no alpha males in our groups and when one of us get a bit of air in our heads and tries to be "a boss" ...... that gets nipped in the bud by any member of the group. Smoking and drinking are acceptable adult behavior no matter where one is as long as being responsible about it is acknowledge and adhered to.
That said, I don't hunt with drunks and irresponsible hunters who are loose with firearms safety and the hunting regulations.

hope you find some good folks to hunt with OP but for heaven's sakes, walk away from the guys who start laying out rules and alpha male bullsh*te.

I would appear he did. Myself I prefer a safe environment when guns are in play.

So your saying at the end of the day when the hunting is done and guns are safely put away and any other chores have been taken care of that you don’t ever have a glass of wine or ice cold beer with dinner? Or maybe a nice rye on ice on the porch as the sun goes down, remember all the firearms are cased or locked up all safe and sound for the night.

Come on guys. Use the search function. There are plenty of “booze at hunt camp?” threads already on the go. No need to derail GunCanuck’s thread to rehash the same old siht.

Back on topic: Do any of you know of a gang looking for some young blood in the Stoney Creek, Hamilton, Grimbsy, etc. area?

Hey man I’m in Hamilton, I started hunting a couple years ago so I don’t know a fraction of what some of these guys know but I’d be down to get into the woods with like minded people.I have one buddy that hunts but usually I’m solo 90% of the time. Oh and You’d be surprised what you can fit into the trunk of a car lol I got a 300lb black bear into a Mazda last year.

I was just rereading this and thinking how big of an area “Southwestern Ontario” is, and thought I’d google it.

Southwestern Ontario is over SIX times the size of P.E.I.

So there you go. Your useless fact for the day. :p

Most groups establish rules by democratic process, not because there is an "Alpha Male Dictator..." unless that person happens to own the land and camp... in which case you are a guest and you don't disrespect the host or don't visit in the first place. Every group I have been in had a list of reasonable rules to keep things running smoothly and to ensure the work load is shared by everyone. If you can't handle organized civilization you would be best off hunting alone. Rules can include simple things like a cooking schedule, dish washing schedule, bringing in an armload of firewood when you enter the camp, etc... that is hardly a dictatorship... in the absence of any rules there are always slobs who take advantage and let others do all the work.

In short, rules are a good thing, as long as they are minimal and reasonable... some groups have experienced tragic incidents as a result of the combination of alcohol and guns (I have a few tragic local stories), so if a camp, by democratic process, decides to limit alcohol consumption or even ban it, that is legitimate. Just because you can legally do something doesn't mean it will be appreciated in a private hunt camp.

I know that I have only experienced the reverse, having been invited to join a group for a moose hunt only to discover that each member brought a case of beer and a bottle for each hunter per day... the first night they got hammered, I got up early and went out hunting, when I returned for lunch half the camp were still in bed... I packed my bags, left the camp with my gear and portaged in to a lake and set up a spike camp and shot a bull three days later, which I packed out by myself and never hunted with that crew again. I would rather too little booze than too much... I have no issue with drinking in moderation while hunting... I also have no issue with a "dry" camp if that is the established culture. I'm there to hunt, not party.

So given a choice between hunting and being able to drink, you would choose drinking.
