Hunting Bullets for Reloading

Thanks everybody. Got it narrowed down slightly, now to find what bullet/load my rifles like best.

Do appreciate the feedback on Bergers for use on elk. Won't get many chances but nice to have an idea of what performance would be like. Although none of my shots have been over 300, was thinking the VLD might help with wind and range calculation issues.

Thanks again.

I like Nosler Accubonds, because for a given bullet weight they have a better BC than a TTSX, TSX or Partition. This helps with wind and carrying energy, they do not have as good of BC as Berger VLD for a given weight, but they perform better than the Berger on game. I find them the perfect middle ground.

One other thing to note is that VLD bullets like the Berger are very sensitive to seating depth. A new reloader may have trouble getting them to shoot very well.

As no one else has mentioned them yet....Barnes LRX. Better B.C. than the TSX and TTSX, and still a monometal construction. I'd say it's all win, but as I haven't actually shot anything yet with 145gr ones out of my 7mmRM, I have zero first hand experience to point to, but it seems like it might be a good fit for what you want.
Not sure what the B.C. is like, but I'd like to give the Hornady GMX a try as well, I have heard only good things so far.

How about the a-max? Haven't seen it mentioned, is there a problem with the bullet? I bought some 178's for my 308 to hopefully shoot elk with. Should I be looking at something else?

I have used the 162gr A-Max out of my 7mm REM MAG for deer and feel this is the biggest game I personally would use them for, they are designed to open up fast with not much weight retention! But that being said no deer I shot with them ever needed a tracking job as they dropped in their tracks!

You might want to consider Matrix Bullets....made by Matrix Ballistics right here in Canada...

A very good point. Personally I wouldn't feel bad using the partition in both cartridges but I prefer 180gr bullets in the 30-06. Probably not necessary where I live but there is no such thing as too dead or too much bullet.

I can't imagine doing mental gymnastics trying to decide what to use in a 308 or 30-06 for non-dangerous game in North America. Load any cup and core between 150 and 180 grains, point it behind the shoulder and you should be good. Repeat as necessary (which will probably be rare).

That would be the last bullet i would use on elk. Unless you enjoy tracking game...

How is a copper bullet with a tungsten weight in the arse-end "mono" metal?

I just gotsa know.

You're thinking of the MRX, the now-discontinued Barnes bullet that used a tungsten insert to increase mass and keep the length down for a given grain size. The LRX is monometal copper with a higher BC and the ability to expand with lower impact velocities.

As many others have pointed out, that's a target bullet, not a hunting bullet. Completely inappropriate for the task unless you like fragments of toxic lead all through your meat and a lot of walking following a faint blood trail. Not my idea of a fun fall day. :)

Guess I'll have to find another load.

No you don't... substitute an Interbond for the A-Max... I'll bet you get very similar performance and the interbond is a dandy hunting bullet... it's worth a try before you start from the ground up...

Yup. I always wanted to try the MRX due to the length savings. Maybe some will turn up at a gunshow. They can sit on my shelf next to the Failsafes and Ballistic Silvertips.

Except it looks like the Interbonds have been discontinued

It is a temporary halt to production... they are focusing on the top sellers to make the most of the boom... still lots on shelves and they will be back in production soon enough.
