hunting camper

hi there,

I"m looking to buy my first camper which will be used as a hunting and family camper as well so it must be decent. I need to fit 4 ppl only.
The question is: what to look for in order to avoid a lemon? What is a decent price for a 19 feet or less? I'm looking for something from late '99s or early 2000.

Look for water leaks, mold around the air vents, signs of rodent infestation. Overall condition of the couch and bed/mattresses. Interior dryness/ dampness... nothing worse than looking at a used trailer and everything is damp and musty smelling. Wheel bearings and tires. Brakes. Washroom/ septic. Propane lines. Plumbing. Working condition of the stove and fridge.

Get a ladder and climb to the roof of the trailer and inspect the overall condition of the roof and air vents.

Look for patch repair work on the exterior side walls of the trailer. Inquire about those repairs.

Check for MOLD.

Remember... most times you get what you pay for. Hunting trailers, from what I've looked at, are just that, a trailer used for hunting and interior cleanliness is not on the top of the priority list.

Trailer Parks do not want old trailers
a 2000 unit would make it 17 years old = no one wants to look at a dirty old grandpaw trailer

last year I was at one park and they were telling people to upgrade or this was last season -for anything over a certian age

Haha too old to look at? Cmon... it's camping, not your real estate values dropping. I get it as a private business.. if you can get away with it.
Maybe you should go check out some trailer parks in Yukon and Alaska. Everything from the best money can buy to homemade junk.
I guess if you have a family and want to take them out in what you can afford, you have to watch for the glampers raining on your parade. Ridiculous. Some people need to pull there heads out.

I am not aware of any park in Ontario that has this restriction at least not in Eastern or North, must be a Southern Ontario thing.

Ontario. Private parks.
The parks I service often have permanent residence, in fact I think the all do in some capacity. In fact the reason that the 2003 from above was sold was because he had to drive it up to the park earlier this season for an inspection before he could even book his holidays about a month ago.
I guess if you have people living there year round paying rent. Do you really want some road beat tag along moving in for the weekend. Who's putting food on your table for the winter... Not that guy. Makes sense to me

Nobody around here would be refused a site for having an older camper. You have to call in advance to reserve your site and they never ask what year your camper is, just length sometimes. They certainly arent going to turn you away at the gate either.

Im building a dedicated hunting trailer right now. It was originally a 28 footer but i removed 4' of camper at the rear and am building a flat deck back there for atv hauling. It won't have an indoor bathroom so i wont be using it for family camping but it will suit my needs well and we have a different camper for the family anyway.

Good information here. I would like to add, try to find a camper that has been kept under cover since new if possible.

at some point I'll go the same way but my money is tight right now. a lot of people told me to wait 'till September or later as prices will drop.

Not too sure where you're located but keep your eye on auction sites. Here we have sgi salvage which is our insurance agency and they auction off total loss vehicles. We've had quite a bit of hail recently so there should be some good deals coming up. Especially if youre not afraid to tackle a project.

I'm from Regina. I've checked SGi and they mostly have mice infested camper which cannot be registered.
Do you know any other auction website ?

I have heard of several nice trailers being totalled because of mouse damage. I wouldn't take one as a gift. Sometimes the RV dealers have older trailers they will sell cheap.

We have to register any trailers we pull on the road in Saskatchewan, no different than anywhere else.
