I see a lot of fleece hunting pants and jackets. How does it hold up as outerwear? Is it for dry days only?

Its hard to find any decent (read: Not $800) hunting outerwear that's not mossymax4realtreeadvantagemountainridgeshadow camo...

I'll wear fleece, but never as an outside layer. It grabs every sort of burr and twig, holds dirt and mud easily, is not wind resistant or water resistant. It is a good insulator, but no more than that.

Fleece starts to look like a ghillie suit after a while, and provides no protection at all from anything. I don't like it as an outer layer at all. It's only advantage is it's quiet.

like these guys said.... no wind barrier

when I was a kid, I was out hunting with a cousin. Standing and walking I was toasty warm. We both jumped on a quad and went touring.
30 min later I had hypothermia.

Personally, I think fleece is for girls. Get yourself some water wicking fabric for your first couple layers, followed up with a good wind barrier.

I've got a whole closet full of that, just looking for something non-camo, quiet and still waterproof.

I mainly use fleece as insulating layers. Some shell garments have a thin fleece outer layer for silencing over windproof and waterproof layers. The main problem I have with higher end stuff is it is usually camouflage and here the regulations require high visibility colours for the upper body for all big game hunting in rifle season. And the choice of camouflage patterns is determined primarily by the marketing and advertising push that the brands put out, rather than what suits the terrain and flora where the user actually hunts.

Stealth suit baby 100% gortex - light as a fart. ($300). Cuts the wind and rain, breathes, wicks moisture. Where what you want underneath, and some light duty camo on top.

I'm done with all the technical stuff. I wear wool. At least when it gets wet, you don't freeze (heavy, though).

Wool is great. Warm, quiet, dries ok and still warm when wet.

My hunting pants used to be a pair or Canadian Army WW2 wool pants. Cheap and practical.

I bet some surplus sites have wool pants from other army sources.

I have been using wool here in Saskatchewan in the rifle deer season for the last couple years. They are generic in color and priced well comparitively. They are a little heavy but warmth is the trade off.

Wool outside, fleece inside, wicking underwear next and if it rains a gortex rain coat. Fleece is good because it dries quicky.

I got mine at the kit shop @ CFB Wainwright. CFB Shilo may have a kit shop. They are real popular with the CF Members. I know they sell them in Gaugetown, too.

They are made in Winnipeg!

Thanks guys!!

After reading on the army fourm i see that this stuff is not the greatest for use as an outside layer.

hmmm made in Winnipeg.....very close to home!!

If it's cold and wet i wear a wool union suit under viking 420 nylon rainpants and jacket.

in sept/early oct if the weather's not bad i just wear jeans and a wool plaid shirt with workboots.

Im just not into spending hundreds of dollars for clothes to hunt in. i buy clothes i can wear on any given occasion.

Went back to wool. Those surplus german army pants are great if you can still find them. There are some really good technical undergarments that do an amazing job of keeping moisture away from the skin.
For all you hockey fans, Under Armour makes camo stuff. I've tried it and it's decent but not as good as some of the more athletic focused stuff. But if hockey players it must be awesome right?
