Hi guys,

I'm just curious to hear if anyone has hunted coyotes with .22's? Do they pack enough punch to kill a coyotes at a 100 yards? I would think so but i'm just making sure. :)

thanks :)

If you're talking .22 rimfire, no, it's not enough gun for coyotes, especially at 100 yards. Sure, a .22 is capable of killing a coyote, but you're far more likely to wound it.

I have heard of coyotes being killed with the .22LR but of course its all about shot placement and the range. I would say its a marginal choice and a 100 yard shot is really pushing the capabilities of the cartridge. Remember that the typical .22LR projectile has less than 90 ft-lbs of energy at 100 yards.

In Newfoundland, for example, you can shoot a coyote with a .22LR if you happen to be hunting on your small game license, but you cannot use a .22LR if you're hunting on your coyote license. (In the latter instance, you need a centrefire rifle up to .225, or shotgun with #2 shot or larger). Kinda of a weird law, but there it is.

Coyotes around here are big friggin animals....at least 100 lbs. A 22 rimfire just aint gonna cut it. In NS I think you can hunt coyotes all year round with any calibre as long as it is under 85 grain. But I could be wrong its been known to happen occassionaly.

At least 100 lbs ? Really ? I'd like to see some pics of those monsters. Our yotes (here in Newfoundland) are pretty big (getting up to around 50-60 lb) and are supposed to have come from your stock (in Nova Scotia). What are you feeding em in NS ?

hmmm..
Yes it's .22LR and I was asking the question because it's either my rem 597 with a scope or (the next smallest caliber i have...) my deer gun, .308 pump with iron sights.

I love my deer gun but it may be a little too much... ;)

I've shot one coyote with a .22LR, however, it was within 40 yards and it was a head shot. I wasn't specifically hunting coyotes at the time. If I was, I would have had my .22-250 in my hands.

I know a guy who shot them with a .22 Mag, and he said even that was marginal for quick kills.

Ive shot a few coyotes with a 22lr.....but then again, I've done lots of things that weren't too smart.

Behind the ear will do it but I think a 22-250 is better.

I got a couple with a 17HMR and I think it was better than a 22lr.....

Eastern coyotes are known to be bigger then Western yotes, but 50-60 lbs MAX is more realistic.

I wouldn't go that far with it, but of course, yes, larger calibers do tend to hit harder. The .243 is a proven yote slayer. Meanwhile, the .17 Rem, .204 Ruger, .221 Fireball and .222 Rem all seem adequate. Interestingly, the .204 Ruger, for example, has more velocity and energy than the .22-250 at 300 yards. And there's a fellow on the PredatorMaster Forums who's been cleaning up so far this year with a .17 Rem.

The thing is, where I hunt, I dont have to make 300 yard shots... the longest shots I can get are probably 100 yard shots, and that's pushing it. That's why I thought I might be able to make it without buying another gun... ;)

dont hunt coyotes with a rimfire unless you're checking traps and shooting them in the head at 10 feet :|

theres good advice, yotes arent wimps of the animal kingdom, and I have seen ones that have chewed there own leg off to get out of a trap, dont underestimate the strength and survivability of a yote there a tuff critter .

and wounding animals sucks but doing it knowing your not matching species and caliber is foolish IMHO :D

Well I live in the country and have seen yotes as close as 50 yards to the house. AS a size comparison...I have a shephard/rotti mix...she stands 27 inches at the shoulder...has a chest of 43 inches and weighs in at 110+ pounds. Some yotes that I have seen are every bit as big as my hound. Now granted they were leaner so I guesstimate that they weighed in anywhere from 80-100 pounds.

In Quebec you can hunt coyotes, wolf, groundhog and red fox with any gun, crossbow or bow of any caliber. And they all are included in your small game license.

I have hunted coyotes in eastern Ontario with Hounds.
A lot of the coyotes were were hunting were actually "coy-dogs" croosed coyote/farm dogs.
These things are a viscous as a wolf, as fast, and won't run like a pure coyote.
they are are HUGE compared to a pure bred coyote.

As far as the 22Rimfire goes, unless that is what you have in your hand at the time, FOGETABOUTIT!!
Coyotes can abosrb a lot of lead, and a centerfire is the way to go.....

Sounds like a coy-dog to me. Or a yote that's been exposed to gamma radiation.
